Hello everyone,
I am running my Z-heads through 2 separate 1x12 cabs: one loaded with the Gold and the other with the Cream(both AlNiCo, both 100 dB sensitivity). I love both speakers equally. Even better when I run them together with the Radial Twin City ABY.
My new "bright" idea is combining them in a 2x12 cabinet. What should I choose? What brings the best out of the speakers? I like big, open, airy, and punchy tone when needed. Not a fan of a ton of unwanted bass. I am big on dynamics and play mostly around the amp tube's break-up point with the guitar volume and a booster.
My 2 options for the new cabinet are: 1) Z-Open back 2x12 2) Z-Best
Would love to read your opinions, and why. Thanks!!!
R.

That's kind of a tough match because the Gold has a sensitivity of 100dB vs the Creamback's 97dB. So the Gold is going to be quite a bit louder than the Creamback.
That said, I'd go with a open back 2x12. The Z-Best is a closed back, long throw cab that is very directional. It was designed for the big stage, so I don't think that's going to be ideal for what you describe.

I think you thought of the ceramic cream-back since I wasn't clear enough in my original posting, now edited. I was referring to the AlNiCo version, 100dB according to Celestion's website: Nominal diameter: 305mm / 12in Nominal power: rating90W Rated impedance: 8Ω or 16Ω Sensitivity: 100dB Frequency range: 75-5000Hz Resonance frequency, Fs: 75Hz Sorry for the confusion!

If the separate cabs are open back and you like the sound of both together, I'd go open back with the 2x12. From what I've read the Z closed back sounds different and might be different enough it wouldn't sound "right" to you.

The Cream alnico replaces the Blue in my case, since I run them in parallel and don't want to blow it up. It's not equal, but good an close enough for me.

I had the Dr Z tuned, oval, open back 2x12 cab and sold it to purchase the Z Best - no regrets at all. My Z Best is loaded with a G12M Creamback and a G12H30 Anniversary and has a Z28 Mk II plugged into it. These speakers pair great in this cab and I don't notice any difference in sound volume given their respective speaker efficacy rating 97 db vs 100 db. The swirl and tone is fantastic and much more user friendly to dial in than I found the open back cab - in my application.
The Z Best is more of a longer throw cab, so if you can sit/stand/play at least 7 ft away it works best. I sit 15 ft away from the cab and it provides a room filling sound - love my Z Best.

Ran 2x12 Dr Z Vertical Backine Open (configuration) with Alnico Golds and sounded very well balanced. Now I moved them into my RedPlate 2x12 Dumble style open back (554 in3) larger. Sounded better in the Dr Z, BUT have an Alnico Cream coming so going to swap that in on the top vertical spot and see whats what. For now running the Dr Z closed back with a V30 on the bottom and CL80 on top (great for that classic rock plus stuff)

I’m a fan of running two 1x12’s and mixing speakers, but every time I try to loade them in the same cab it was a no go for me. You seem to loose the focus of the speaker having them in one cab. It changes the dynamics and bass response as well. I’m not saying you won’t get lucky, but I don’t think you will get the result you’re looking for.
