Just playing my EZG-50 Combo today. Had the full sweet of updates done to it by Don. Wow that is a killer killer sounding amp!!
Not sure what difference those caps make. They suppose to be better? Not sure why someone would have them changed.

What are you going to do with a handful or Orange Drops
Thats funny if you're into geeky humor

I saw that on Reverb myself. And the mention of the upgraded capacitors caught my attention also. I have used the blue SoZo capacitors in my amp builds (Fender blackface Vibroverb, Super Reverb and Bassman clones) but have no idea how they compare to the orange capacitors in my EZG-50 amp. I'd be interested to hear any opinions or comments. I'm going to assume if Dr. Z thought they were better or more appropriate they would have used them in the first place.

I used them in a 5E3 and it turned out great, but agree that changing them in the EZG is probably fruitless.

Not all "upgrades" are upgrades. I drank the fancy caps Kool-Aid for a while in guitars but finally never bought in to the hype. Maybe my ears were just never good enough to hear the difference between two similar value caps of different supposed quality. I experiment with values every now and then. I'm sure that EZG sounds fine with either type of cap if the work was done correctly.

I’ve tried all kinds of caps in amps I’ve built, Sozo, Jupiter, Mojotone Dijon, Mallory and Orange drop. There maybe subtle differences, but it’s really hard to A/B them objectively even when setting them up with a switch. They are all polyester film types. You really need several good “ears” and a good lab to really separate them. I’m certain Dr Z and his team do this in their lab which is far better than mine.
For hobbyists, it come down to how you set your board up and how easy the caps are to mount. I’ve found the Orange drops to have thicker leads than I like and are harder to mount than the others. They are a cool orange color though. Jupiter are nice caps, but the ink on the labels can come off. Sozo are more expensive, but are a nice blue color! Mallory and Dijon are fine too. Sozo and Jupiter do put a line on one side indicating where the outer foil layer attaches. This helps when orientating the cap. For the others, you can run a test to orient them. It’s not critical, but some feel it helps reduce noise.
Unless it’s a cheap amp, there is no need to deviate from the caps the designer installed. They spent a lot of time selecting components. A speaker change has way more impact on sound than the caps. Even raising or lowering you pickup height has a bigger impact.

I’m always guarded about buying used amps, guitars etc., but especially so when someone says they modded it, as in this case. If you modded it for the supposed better, then why are you getting rid of it. I realize we all move on to newer, different, gear that we feel will suit us better, but still the “caveat emptor” in me comes out.
