I'm on the waiting list for the combo over at Sweetwater. But my other guitar player picked up the head first! So now I think it wouldn't make sense for both of us to be playing the same amp on stage. I'm hesitant on getting it. It's good to have tonal difference on stage. BUT... He's the "dirty" humbucker Les Paul guy in the band and I'm the "cleaner" Tele guy for the most part. Before he got the Z28, he mostly played the Cure and I'd play a ZLux and that worked. They're similar. So my question to you guys is this: Do you think two guitar players in a country rock band BOTH playing Z-28's would work?

Not an issue. You'd both be using them differently.

What speaker(s) is he using with his head?? Different speaker(s) can make the same amps sound very different. The amp offers up a wide range of tones. Great cleans tones to dirty tones.

I'd say as long as it has enough headroom for the volumes you play at (and I'm sure it probably does w/ the 5881 now), no issue. With the master he can run the gain high and master low and because your the cleaner guy, just do the opposite. I bet it would sound pretty cool actually!

I say yes you both play different guitars this amp is just going to bring out both of your guitars tone even better. It really shines with single coil guitars the note articulation and string response is all there it gives you back everything you give it and even more. You can lay back and it will purr like a kitten then roll up and dig in and it will snarl like a wildcat. I will say it again it's an amp that you have to gig it to really appreciate it.
It also sounds great with humbuckers. I have a Suhr Classic S that has a humbucker in the bridge and it sings through the Z-28 MK11. Your clean tone will cut through and both of you will fill the room. Are you getting the head or combo?
The only reason I ask is because I have the combo and it does have that 3D surround sound vibe too it. I never played through the head version. I voted yes because I still cannot believe how good this amp sounds. Plus with both of using that amp with different guitars I think that would be super cool and sound amazing as band.

He has the head, I'd go with the combo.

He has the head, I'd go with the combo. Good choice. Now that will def change the Dynamics of your band. You will def hear and fell a difference for sure.

He’s playing humbuckers, you’re playing single coils. I think there in lies your greatest difference. How many bands of our younger days played the same amps, some even playing similar guitars. You’re probably playing complimentary parts, so again I don’t see an issue. Lastly if it doesn’t work, I’m right around the corner. LOL.

But the general consensus here seems to be that there would still be different tones. Case closed. I’ve been on the waiting list for the combo for awhile….not sure when they’ll get more or how far back in line I am….

Hello. I am the infamous "other" guitar player. You see, I gave Rockerfeller the opportunity to be the first but when he didn't ask her out I did. Now we are married (Z28 MK II I'm talking about, not a woman) and I sense he may be having regrets. It might have been the glorious room filling tone coming from her at our last gig. Our it may have been the wonderful touch sensitivity that I experience playing. Keep in mind, this poor sap was playing Laney amps when I met him years ago. He has the fever bad. The poor guy has a Z Lux, a Jetta, a Z Wreck and probably the greatest tele amp ever made, the elusive DB4, yet he pines after my new love. I say nay! It's my time to shine with my love. (Z28 MkII I mean.)
Really, It's OK buddy. If you want to jump on one I'm good with it. 😂

Now you’re just bragging! And I played Laney amps for free! So that wasn't so bad....until one blew up on stage and I had to borrow your Remedy. Which I bought from you the day after I gigged it for the first time.

2 cents... I played in a band with 2 guitarists that did at lest a few hundred gigs. For the last 50 or so, I played a Fender Blues Deville and the other guy a Fender Blues Deluxe. We both played Strats, both used tube screamers, but we sounded totally different regardless. There's no reason why 2 Z28's would be a bad thing, and if one sounds good in the band, 2 will sound better.

I don’t care what the other guy is playing, I’m playing a Z28.

Shame on you Rockerfeller, you should know by now that the only thing better that a Z28 on stage is two Z28s. 😉

I think it's clear what the forum thinks! I just talked to Sweetwater and my rep told me......."May"

I don't see any issue using 2 Z28s on the same stage. They will both sound awesome and will be their own thing with the different guitars!
Dr Z amps LOVE single coil guitars too!!
