I have a couple of Z combos I'd like to exchange speakers with as I have a ceramic and alnico Weber Legacy speakers and want to explore different combinations. However I have no experience with swapping speakers and understand that sometimes the connections from the speaker cable to the speaker are soldered. Does anyone know if the stock speaker with Docs amps come soldered or are they the connection type that just detaches? I'll probably have to learn how to solder sooner or later but it would be helpful to know if I need to buy a soldering iron before I disassemble the combo... Thanks in advance to those who can help this noobie!

All of them I've had use spade clip connectors. You can pull them off and push them onto the speaker tabs. Some speaker tabs are thicker than others, so make sure they are snug when you push them on. Also, don't over tighten the speaker mounting screws. They should be just snug, not cranked down.

All the Zs I've seen have the detachable connectors. Though they often fit very tight (a good thing) so when you remove them make sure you get a good grip on the metal and not the wire (don't want to pull it out) and I find wiggling them off works better than pulling. If you haven't done a swap before, sometimes the speaker will not let loose when you try to pull it up. Don't force it, you could rip some of the surround off. Folks around here have had good luck with hitting the edges with a hair dryer to heat it up to get things to break loose. If you're brave, you can slide a very thin spatula like thing under the edge and gently move it around the speaker until it breaks loose. Again be very careful as you could put a hole in the speaker. If you do get a little bit of surround torn off, don't worry about it.

As I am sure you are aware, forum etiquette requires that you post what the amps are and what speakers you end up liking in them.

One more thing you need to be aware of-a pretty important thing actually if you want to avoid frustration. The spade connectors (and the spades themselves on the speakers) come in more than one size, and they may not always be standardized among speaker manufacturers. I’m thinking two sizes exist at least that are common and neither are the size found at Home Depot. They look the same to the eye but you’ll bend the speaker’s spades trying to force on the wrong ones. You’re usually safe using the same brand replacement speaker that Doc put in the amp originally but if you’re having to force it on it’s no bueno and you may need to change out the connector.

Of course thanks for asking, I have a Z-Plus studio lite with a celestian blue, a Z-28 MKII head, & a Nova combo w/ G12H 30. My cab is a 2x12 with Weber ceramic and alnico Legacy. The alnico Legacy sounds fantastic w./ the Plus & that's what I intend to swap first. The blue is terrific but the low end is a wee bit lacking. Thanks for the spade connector tip, hopefully I'll get lucky & they'll be the same kind.
