Hi!
So I'm thinking about buying a Cure, partly for standalone use but also for pairing with my Z Wreck Jr. I plan to run them both together with the Z Wreck Jr. at the edge of breakup and the Cure fairly clean, and then run dry effects into both amps but only use the Cure for wet effects (either in front or in the fx loop). A couple of questions:
- Is there enough volume on tap in the Cure to be able to do this? I mostly run the master on my Z Wreck Jr. between noon and 3 o'clock and have the volume at about 10-11 o'clock.
- I've read that some people are underwhelmed by the fx loop, is this something that can be fixed using buffers?
- Has any changes been made to the fx loop in the 5881 version compared to the older 6v6 version?
Thanks, and take care!

I have a Z Wreck Jr and a Cure, but don't use them how you're thinking of using them. I actually prefer the Cure- it's the amp that sounds the most like "me". I have my Cure set dirtier than my Z Wreck Jr. On the Cure, I have the volume around 12:00-1:00, the Master set around 3:00, and the Level wherever it needs to be.
I think the Cure, especially with 5881 power tubes, should be able to keep up with the Z Wreck Jr. Mine has 6V6s and keeps up fine, but I don't have my Z Wreck Jr's Master set as high as yours- I usually have the Volume and the Master set around 10:30.
Regarding the Cure's loop, I'm not a big fx loop user but typically have a Strymon Flint in the Cure's loop and it works well.

Does the master produce any noticeable gain from the output tubes? If so, at around what level?

Thanks, really appreciate your answer! Does the master produce any noticeable gain from the output tubes? If so, at around what level? Cranking the master on the Cure makes the amp sound noticeably dirtier, not because the output tubes are distorting, but, I believe, because more signal from the preamp is hitting the phase inverter causing distortion there. I think a lot of the sound that people think is output tubes distorting is really the phase inverter.
It's nice to be able to balance a pre phase inverter master and a post phase inverter master. More amps should have that option.
To actually get the output tubes to distort without increasing volume levels you'd need an attenuator between the output transformer and the speaker.

I am currently pairing my wreck jr with a z28 mkii, I just posted a lengthy description on the z28 mkii page if you care to read. I know it doesn’t answer your question about the cure but depending on the sound you’re going for z28 might be a good alternative! Good luck.
