I've been using my Z28 MKII exclusively since I got it last summer, and it just keeps giving up the goods.
So for variety I spent yesterday afternoon working on a kit amp I built a couple of years ago, the Allen Hot Fudge w/Nuts. Here's a pic of the innards: Gut Shot. When I was done I thought it sounded pretty killer. Great early ZZ Top tones. So I took it to my Big Band rehearsal last night and in the mix it was flat, no chime at all, really no good for a situation where you need anything but a dirty sound. I was bummed, but then again this is basically a Brownface Deluxe 6G3 type circuit, and it's a dirty amp. I'm going to see what I could build during the next few months while the snow is here, maybe I'll go to the EF-86 front end.
When I got home I plugged into my Z28 MKII and there it was again---the sweet yet so present swirling, glorious tone that I was jonesin for all rehearsal. I can't say enough about this amplifier; it has it all. Back off the guitar volume and it does great piano like rhythm guitar tones, crank it up and you're into edge-of-breakup territory. Hit it with an OD or distortion and it screams. All in a 1x12 combo that's easy enough on my 70 year old back and loud enough to get over a cooking big band or a rock combo. I just love this amp. Thanks again, Dr.Z for the best amp I've ever plugged into. Now if I could only get just a little bit of that goodness into one of my home builds...
