Picked up a combo today. Not Sure if the owner is a member, but he has a few Dr Z amps including a 2nd DB4. This is a combo with the 6n14n power tubes and a Gold.
1st off, Brad Paisley's stage volume must be something! I've seen a few scaled down shows with the DB4/Wreck as just one of each in the 1x12 combo's. But we all have seen the full 2x setup with 2x12's. Those 4 amps turned up must be insane!
Anyhow, I have had my Wreck junior for over a year. Love it. It gives up the goods with a Telecaster pretty quick as far as breakup.
The DB4 is a beast. With my Tele's it's pretty clean until around 1 o'clock and then it really comes on. VERY loud at that point. 1/2 power is really nice and brings it down a lot. The gold is louder than the GB for sure when in 1/2 power. Percussive and girth are 2 worlds I have heard describing the amp. It is this for sure. Like the Wreck, one has to work the dynamics to get the most out of this amp. There are not many good demos out there but the Peaches Guitars video with 2 other Z amps is the closest to my ears to what I hear with my Telecasters. There is a nice top end, like the wreck, but it's different... Not bad at all, just different.
I had a Matchless Clubman prototype a LONG time ago that had a different octal preamp. That amp was a nightmare as far as finding a quite V1. That amp did have the most amazing clean tone though. That amp hated overdrives though IMO at least the ones I had at the time.. The DB4 seems to take the drive/boost/OD and make it part of the amps sound. The Wreck is great with the same pedals for the most part but the DB4 seems less picky.
With the amp on 3 it has a very complex clean that is really something. 1/2 or full power. Amazing really and like the GB with the Wreck Jr, the gold is a big part of it I assume. I doubt I'll ever get the amp loud enough for serious drive, but thats ok as I like the amp's to be fairly clean unless I really hit it hard or kick on a drive. The DB4 will be more than enough of any outdoor/bigger stage!
I hope to get some time comparing the 2 amps over the next few days.
