Before I blow anything up, would replacing the AT7 with an AX7 in my Z-Lux give me any more reverb or just be a waste of time? I know it's an easy swap, but, as I said, don't want to mess anything up, so I thought I'd ask first. FWIW, the amp has not had the update done to it, just looking for a little more splash.
Thanks in advance

It wouldn’t result in damage to the amp, but might add noise and other undesirable effects. The AT7 was chosen for its higher current capacity to drive signal through the spring tank. The AX has higher gain, but lacks the current. Won’t hurt to try, but don’t expect an improvement or Doc would have done it initially.

FWIW, I had a Maz 8 with kinda the same problem and I replaced the AU7 with first an AT7 and finally an AX7 and had a noticeable improvement in the reverb with no additional noise. I was just afraid, since the innards of every amp are different, that I'd ask before trying the swap. Might give it a try in the morning.

What Todd said is right on. You might like the sound with a 12AX7 but it's life expectancy won't be great. After all, driving a transformer into the reverb tank takes some muscle and the AX7 doesn't have the 'oomf' current wise to hold up.

Thanks for the replies, guys. After playing the amp for several days, I've come to enjoy the more subtle reverb. I never used a lot with my Fender amps anyway, so all's well. Sometimes less is more....

Sometimes less is more.... I forgot to ask, is yours the MKII or the original? I ask because the MKII upgrade will definitely add the splash.

It’s not just a reverb update.

It’s not just a reverb update. I know, also MV upgrade, I have no problem with that either, as it already is. 😁 Bf/Sf switch…is that necessary??

Was and still is my go to amp. Reverb was not an issue for me before the update. What I really liked about the update was it fixed the noisy foot switch issue. Prior to the update I rarely used the foot switch but really wanted to. After it’s dead quiet and I can use the trem remotely without the distraction. The other updated stuff was gravy.

Another non-issue for me, fs is dead quiet....
