I recently picked up an anniversary year Z-28 head with 1x12 convertible cab. I was wondering if anyone else noticed that the amp breaks up at low volume. I’m running mainly humbucker (low output PAF) guitars and especially notice this on the neck pickup. The other issue that I’ve noticed is a weird gain oscillation when I play certain notes high up on the E string. Nowhere else. Everything else about the amp seems fine to me. Quiet operation and sounds great cranked. Do these sound like maybe a filter cap issue or something like that? I recently put some new JJ 6V6’s biased at 28ma and changed the V2 from a 5751 to a 12AX7 to see if either of those could be the culprit but there wasn’t any change.
Thanks for your help!

Did you swap V1 out for a different ef86? Tighten the chassis mount screws and use deoxit on the jacks. After that, I'm out of ideas. Good luck.

Wish I could be more help, but I gig my Z28 pretty loud and clean. No issues with headroom here. I'm with Ridge... Try those ideas first.

So after speaking with repairs (very helpful btw) I think we have it nailed down to the bass pot being bad and it pushing too much bass which is why it’s breaking up at such a low volume. I’m going to take it to my tech to change the bass pot out to see if that resolved the issues.

No kidding. It’s that when you turn the bass all the way down, there’s no cutting happening.
