I just happened to check Sweetwater tonight and saw they had a Z-28 head in stock, talk about dumb luck. I told my wife about it and that I really wanted one and her response was go for it "You aren't getting any older". Man I got lucky when she picked me 23 years ago! If Sweetwater is like usual I will see it on Friday or Saturday, I know what I will be doing this weekend!

Just curious, what cab or cabs and speaker types will you be plugging to?

Just curious, what cab or cabs and speaker types will you be plugging to? I will be using either a Dr. Z 1x12 open back with a Vintage 30 or a Z-Best with a Vintage 30 and a G12 H30. My plan is to get another cab, probably a 1x12, in a few months with maybe a Creamback. On a side note I notice that I said getting any older, which alas, is not true!

Another is a 2x12 slant top with a Creamback M65 on the bottom and a Jensen Blackbird on top. My favorite but a tad loud for some gigs. And another 1x12 loaded with a Jensen Blackbird 40. Great choice for home and smaller gigs due to the 96db sensitivity. I have several more with other speakers but not a good match for the MKii.

I have been thinking that I might start building cabs when I retire in 3 years. I think it would be a good retirement activity. I am so ready to retire!

I have a Blackbird 40 in my Jetta and love it. I haven't gotten around to trying it on the Z28mkII yet, but I'm very interested. I love the combo tone so it'll take a LOT for me to swap out the stock Creamback.

Two speakers can really sound huge, especially if you have space to fill!

Congratulations! I recently picked up the combo version and I am in love! This is my 9th Z, including the original z-28, and I can tell you without a doubt it’s my favorite yet. It just does everything from clean to edge of breakup to full on creamy overdrive. Such a great amp. Of course my 99’ Route 66 is a close second, but that one is just so dang loud. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

The amp came on Friday but since it was family night I didn't plug in. This morning I went to plug straight into my new amp with my Tele to see how it sounds. Sounded great and I started adjusting the controls to check them out and then the amp made a strange sound and the volume went low. Then like a second later it made a click sound that reminded me of the sound glass makes when it cracks from temperature stress. Then there was nothing, just a faint hum and occasional short static. Looking at the tubes one of the power tubes filament was pretty dim, maybe not even glowing at all. Emailed support so will see what they suggest. So my joy today was short lived!

Sounds like it had a ruff trip via UPS to your house. I'm off on Mondays but Don at repairs can can help you 216-475-1962 or repairs@drzamps.com . We'll get you fixed up , have no fear. Sad but true this is the worst time of the year to ship fragile packages. Z

I have sent an email but I will probably give Don a call tomorrow as well just to be able to say i have talked to him on the phone, he has a very good reputation. I had no concerns about this being taken care of, customer service at Dr. Z is pretty legendary. Since it is a new amp with different tubes that my others I wasn't able to try swapping out the power tubes. I will have to get some on order.

Sad but true this is the worst time of the year to ship fragile packages. Z I almost waited a few more months to send my EZG in to Don for the MKII mods because of this but decided to send it in anyway. Fingers crossed until it gets back OK. Mule, I hope everything goes smoothly for you.

Mule, I hope everything goes smoothly for you. I had never considered that there were bad times of the year to ship, but it does make sense. I talked to Don this morning and I am sending it in so they can check it out on the bench. Probably the best course of action, make sure it isn't more than the tube. I ended up using the box my Maz 38 came in a couple of years ago since it was in better shape than the box the Z-28 came in. It looks like between FedEx and UPS it did have a rough time in transit. Anyway I have no doubt that I will be taken care of.

I thought I would give a quick update. UPS finally got the amp to Dr Z yesterday and as I suspected one of the power tubes failed. You can see a major crack in the envelope. Anyway I am hoping to see the amp next week sometime. I am getting excited looking forward to playing it!

I got the amp back Friday, Don is great to work with and they really turned the amp around fast! I have been able to use it for about 2.5 hours so far. 20 minutes of that time was at stage volume, it was fun to feel the thump of the amp through my Z-Best. I really like the EF 86 front end! With 12ax7 front ends I am always fighting them to keep them, to my ear, from being a little harsh. It hasn't mattered which amp I was using if I wasn't careful that little bit of harshness would creep in. But the EF 86 didn't have that at all, it really let the chime of my Tele come through with no harshness. And it takes pedals really well, I am going to have to cycle through some to see which I like best. So wow, this amp is really living up to my expectations!

I gigged mine last night, and have three more gigs this week. I LOVE this amp. It's the greatest sound I've ever had onstage (or at home), ever. Never harsh and always present and sweet in the mix. Sweet that is, unless you hit it hard with a distortion or OD pedal, then it screams delight.
