Hi everyone, I have a Z-Plus which I love, and a Jetta that I am currently trying to sell so I can get... Before the Z-28 was released & I heard the demos I was set on getting a new Z-Lux, but now I'm not sure as the new kid on the block sounds amazing in the demo I've heard. Also watching Docs AMA on the Z-28 has me second guessing which would be right for me. I love and use several pedals which the Z-Plus handles great & I've read the Z-Plus is similar. Since the closest dealer is a couple of hours away & don't usually carry a lot of models the feedback from Z-talk is my best way to help me decide.

What type of tone you like. The Z-Lux has more of a Fender Deluxe type of tone too it. It's much fatter sounding then a Fender deluxe though. It also holds its tone in all the frequency's better then a Fender Deluxe it never gets flubby. It also takes pedals very well. Plus it has reverb and the Z-28 does not have reverb. But trust me the z-28 don't need reverb. When I had the Z-lux it also sounded great just straight in no effects at all. The Z-28 is a completely different animal. It's exactly the way the Doc described it in the video he made. It takes pedals better than any amp I have ever owned. I have had pretty much almost every amp the Doc built except for a few of them and the Z-28 is my all time fav. The z-28 can get Fender and Marshall type of tones which is what I like about it. This new version housed in that bigger cab is going to be off the chain! I have no doubts about it. 42LBS With a Master volume and a creamback speaker in it + 3D TONE!!! Who would not want that? I got mine on order. I hope this helped bro. They are both good amps I know its hard to choose some times.

Don't have a Lux but I've got a Z28mkII, EZG50, Cure, etc.... the EZG and Cure are amazing. Better at Fender than Fender! They sit firmly in that camp and it's glorious. If that's what you want, I'm sure the Lux can deliver as well.
The Z28 is totally it's own thing. It can give you hints of the big three. But it is truly unique. It may be the best amp I've ever played..... Insert words here... percussive, responsive, harmonic, resonate, dynamic..... can't say enough about this new amp!

I would think that it's all about a wide-range in American black-panel type tones (the Z-Lux) from low- to mid-gain with all sorts of bells & whistles & features. Versus more brown-panel/pseudo-British tones (the Z-28) with very few "features" and yet a very direct guitar-to-speaker kind of response, and maybe more gain/distortion potential. The 'Lux will be a bit more expensive, too, with all those added features.

I have those amps as well, and I just got my Z-28 MKII recently. It's just like nick0 says, it completely stands alone. It's got a quality about it that is totally unique, and an overdrive that's incredible in the way it hits you and cleans up with guitar volume. It is the best amp I've ever played. I've gigged it once and it stands out in the mix in a way that lets you know "I'm here!" but doesn't overwhelm or get strident. It shimmers but doesn't hurt the ears. Very cool. If it were me, I'd get the MKII and use the money saved (right now it's $1000) to get a great tremolo/reverb pedal. That's the setup I'm using with my Big Band right now and it's great. I got a Keely 30ms reverb/delay/multitracker and a TC Pipeline tremolo. It's the best guitar tone I've ever had.
Happy to say I don't have to, but if I had to choose I'd put the Z28 MKII right at the top of the amp to keep if I had to sell all the others.
