I have a Peavey 112 express 65W solid state amp that runs 8 ohms. (i'm also running a 20W preamp in the loop)
I have a 2x12 cabinet with two 8 ohm 12" speakers. I want to know if you could use a dummy load to trick the amp to think it's running 4 speakers when it's actually running three 8 ohm speakers and a dummy load to make it all 8 ohms safely. Is this possible with two 8 ohm 100W resisters on a heat sink running parallel? I also have a 65W / 8 ohm attenuator that I was thinking I could run between the cabs for a balance. I've seen a couple of threads about the dummy load and the responses are all saying you wont get more power. Well this is not about power, it's a quest for tone. What are your thoughts on this?

What does the manual say about running it into different loads? In my experience, ss amps tolerate imbalances better than tubes, which can serve 50-150% of rating as long as it’s not cranked. I am intrigued by a 20w “preamp” in your loop, as that could really strain the output circuit. What you describe isn’t a thing I would try. 😱

The preamp is a digitech RP1. I'm using the amps distortion and the RP1 effects. Is that a bad idea?

It might also make more noise in the effects loop than before the amp- your ears will tell you what works best. Most of the time-even when I’m fairly sure effects loops are the right place to put something- I wind up putting it at the front because they sound better that way.

It sounds really good with the 1x12 or the 2x12's looped or in front. Here's the thing I want to see if the open back cab can blend with the closed back cab. Open for highs and mids, closed for lows. So on the dummy load, will it hurt to use it in place of a speaker? If the dummy load doesn't work, then I'm going make a head and put the electronics in it and run 2x12 16 ohm cab with 8 ohm head. I appreciate you taking time to respond to this adventure

No problem. I don’t think I would do the dummy load as one of the speakers. It’s likely going to be seen as a higher load and not receive much of the current, anyway.
When I think of closed back speakers, they typically sound best with “Marshally” or “Hiwatty” sounds. Open backs tend to sound better for me on everything else.

I've also seen plenty of things with PA power amps like "produces x power at this load, this at that load, minimum load 2 ohms". So my general thought is the load doesn't really matter to a SS amp. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm also not totally they need any load at all. A quick search of that looks like it doesn't.
