My new Z28MKII was delivered yesterday. Playing hss strat straight in till about 2am. My first time with a ef86 front end and 5881 power tubes.
What blew me away is the way the amp overdrives. With the volume at 2:00, treble 3:00 and bass at 10:00 you can drive the amp with a heavy hand but it'll completely clean up with a softer touch. No volume knob even needed. Incredible! It comprsses really nicely too so the volume doesn't take your head off when you lay into it and doesn't dissappear when you play soft. I was honestly surprised by how well it naturally compressed. The bass is clean and huge without muffled sound and the crisp top end is driven and compressed slightly. The overdrive tone is really sweet and rich sounding. You can let notes ring and even though its overdriven, it reminds me of a really nice Taylor acoustic that I have. The harminics just dance around the room and the string to string definition is so clear.
It's unlike anything I have ever played. A truly unique design! Very pleased! Thanks again to the Doc and team!

Great first report. So....what was the master volume set at 2am?? Thanks! It was all over the place. I parked it at noon eventually. It had all the good stuff as it did all the way up. But it was a little less volume and it seemed to tighten everything up a little bit. It works great.

After more time with the amp, I gotta say that I am really bonding with it. It has a voice and feel that I've never experienced before. The compression, response, overdrive, and harmonic content continue to impress.
I'm also starting to get a feel for the percussive nature of this circuit and cabinet combo. It's got such a well tuned low end, you can snap a string and it responds like a kick drum.
I tried a thinline tele style guitar with Fender's cunife wide range pups. That guitar can sound thin and shrill is some amps. But the new Z28 had it sounding beautiful! I didn't even need to mess with the controls.
It's still new, but it may be the best amp I've ever played. And I love all my Z amps. This one is doing something different......
For the price of this thing right now, it would be foolish to pass it up.

That’s the one thing I love about the z-28 it’s the way it responds to your picking attack and strumming. It has a quick resonse it can cut like a ginsu knife or crunch like a old Marshall. And the fact Doc put it in the cab he made the Z- master in was really a genius move. I played the Fender Vibro King for over 20 years and after 11 surgery’s on both my hands and two total knee replacements I decided lugging around a 72 lb amp is not really a great idea anymore. I have had several of the docs amps and each one of them had their unique voicing but the Z-28 was like the closest thing as far as feel and tone to me that the vibro king had. The only thing different was the way they moved air. The vibro king really filled the rooms I played in. That is the whole 3D thing Doc was talking about in the video. I have no doubt that this new version is going to be exactly what I been looking for. I am so excited about it. I don’t care about it not having a loop either I totally agree it don’t need one. The master volume was the most important thing but now with that cab it’s going to be even better!

damn. I have enough amps and enough Z’s… but the R66 / Z28 is the configuration I’d like to have back, especially with a MV.

When will you get to try it out on a gig? I'll have it at a full band rehearsal within a couple weeks. Tuki is making me a cover. Gotta keep it pretty!
