Sorry in advance for such a long post...
Let me set the stage (No pun intended) I'm in Indiana and we set up on stage at an outdoor venue. It was a in the 80's and humid. We setup, did sound check and had about an hour to kill before show time. During that hour my amp was on, but on standby, my usual practice to keep my amp warm for the show. About half way into the first set, I heard my amp drop out. No sound. Then it came back within a couple of measurers of the song. Then it did it again, I looked down at it and noticed the power jewel light was not lit, then it came back on as did the sound. Not wanting to damage the amp and further, I put it in standby and grabbed my backup amp from the truck. (Thankfully we are a 2 guitar band!!) I came in with my backup amp, then shut off my Z. I swapped out and played the show on my little Goodsell Champton.
This is August and I re-tubed my amp early this year (January-March?). I played maybe 10 shows on it. I like to switch out my amps for variety. So, tubes are really new. Once I had a chance to look into my Maz, I took the back panel off so I could view the tubes. I took the cylinder covers off of the pre-amp tubes. I let it run for quite a while. I plugged a guitar in and left it off of standby, at least an hour. Everything seemed to work fine. I did notice that V3 (Phase inverter tube?) wasn't very bright at all. I took a piece of paper to hold between it and the power tube next to it, to make sure I wasn't seeing a reflective glare. I'm pretty sure it had a little light in it, but not really.
Question. If V3 is not working properly or at all, can the amp still work without the phase inverter? if so, does that make the power tubes work harder/hotter? Was my problem due to that and being outside? Was I overheating because of the V3 being out making my power tubes extra hot on a hot day? How bright should V3 be lit?
I appreciate having a place to go for questions like this.
Thanks!!!
