A little while back I had the pleasure of stopping by the Z shop. Doc always has something brewing in the back and this time was no different. There was a pair of Z28s, one protype and one near production model. Both sounded great but that was my just my 1st impression . . .
2nd impression came at a recent visit to a Z bros house where I got to spend some time with his early production model amp.
It's a 1x12 combo with a Alnico Creamback in. The amp is top mounted in the cab like the Zmaster.
It's not often that I get to use the words American voiced and chimy in the same sentence . . . . but I will here.
I've owned 3 Z28's over the years and currently use 1x10 combo at church. Always get complements on my tone.
The MKII has a lot of what I really love about the Z28. It's American voice with a British accent is unmistakable. It's kinda like a Route 66 and Maz Jr had a beautiful baby together. The low end is thick and rich, very full sounding but then as you get to the top strings there is a sparkly shimmer to it that gives the amp its magic. I was primarily playing a Les Paul and was very pleased with how mich bite I could get when I dug in and how pretty it played when I laid off. The Z28s of the past the past always amazed me with their clean sustain and the MKII has all of that!
The one thing I wasn't expecting that really blew me away was how 3 dimensional this amp sounds. The open back combo cab helps with this but I really felt like I was standing in the sound not just having it hit me from the front.
Played several guitars through it and even tried a different speaker or 2. Big smiles all the time while playing.
Oh ya, I almost forgot, the Master volume! Each of my previous Z28s always sounded great cranked up but I rarely got the chance to crank them up. The master volume on the MKII allows that cranked sound while taming the volume. The overdrive on this amp is smooth with a nice sizzle sound in top. I really like that you can get a great overdrive tone that sounds clean but has the feel of cranked amp. It will get a little raunchy too!
Buy one, you regret it, every Z I own does something different with a different voice, this amp delivers another must have tone!!!
