Hey guys, just a few quick questions. I've been using a Fulltone OCD for the last month or so now (purchased it when I got my Maz Jr.) Does anyone have any recommendations for getting that Eric Johnson-esque lead tone? Now, don't get me wrong. I'm a big Eric Johnson fan and I am fully aware that there is much more going on in his tone than just his equipment, but if I wanted to go for that late 60's Marshall sound, what would you guys recommend in terms of settings or even tubes? Would changing the tubes to a different type reveal a noticeable difference? Thank you for your time!
P.S. this amp is THE most versatile and tone filled I have EVER played!

I totally agree with Tas. EJ seems to favour the Silicon units. I highly recommend the MJM London Fuzz II. The best silicon fuzz I have ever tried. His Germanium fuzz which is just the London Fuzz is also really sweet. The Fulltone 70 fuzz which is a silicon fuzz will also do the trick. Try out as many as you can because even with the best conditions and the highest standards in assembly all Fuzzes will differ slightly in sound. I actually asked Michael Milcetic from MJM to hand pick me one from his stock. I don't know if he really did but I am completely impressed with the MJM London Fuzz II and the MJM Blues Devil he sent me. www.mjmguitarfx.com/mjm_london_fuzz2.htmlSounds. The silicon clips remind so much of EJ's tone. The germanium clips are definitely more early hendrix sort of vibe. While the Silicon is the Hendrix band of gypsys vibe. www.mjmguitarfx.com/mjm_soundsamples.htmlJust to add another pedal to the table, I have heard some players get pretty convincing 'EJ' violin tones using a ProCo Rat.

Great suggestions for pedals in this thread, but in the meantime, I think you can get very close with the OCD with the following tweaks. #1.) Max the Cut and roll down the Treble (9:00-10:00) on the amp. Run the Mid around 1:30, Volume around 12:00 and use the high gain input. Adjust Bass so the amp isn't boomy. (Adjust as necessary for your speaker(s)/cab.) These settings yield the fattest tone with the most sustain. #2.) Swap out the #6 GT-EL84-S for a pair of #4s. It makes the amp a lot creamier when overdriven (with pedals or by cranking). Also improves tone at lower volumes. #3.) Use Tung-Sol 12AX7s in the preamp. They're a little higher gain than the now-stock Svetlanas and they really respond well to pedals with a nice singing tone. #4.) Use a Sovtek/GT 5AR4. It sounds creamier than JJ and Shuguang and, for some reason, the GT version sounds better than Sovtek from other sources. I'm using the HP mode of my OCD for my high gain EJ-type tones with the Drive max'ed and the Tone about 1:00. I set the Level to provide a boost above unity for solos. This boost slightly overdrives the amp too, which increases sustain and complexity and that singing EJ-style tone. The LP mode is a little sweeter than the HP mode, but it doesn't have as much gain. Make sure, when trying this, that you let the amp warm up with some playing for a while before making your final judgement. It gets darker and creamier as it gets hotter.
