Hi,
I have a Nova that I bought brand new this past December. Since then it has been used daily for at least 60 minutes. The amp just recently started making loud static and 'popping' noises. It makes these noises even with no guitar plugged into the input jack.
I have done some searches here on the forum and the results point to replacing the tubes. My question is, which should I start with? Do I start with the preamp tubes, the output tubes or the rectifiier? Any suggestions for the best place to buy quality tubes? Any places or brands of tubes I should stay away from?
Thanks for any input.

Before you start replacing tubes, is your cell phone on or near your amp?

Before you start replacing tubes, is your cell phone on or near your amp? Great question. No, my cell phone is not on the amp the closest it has been to the amp when the amp is making the noises is about 10 feet; just on the other side of the room.

That's close enough to affect the amp. Put it in airplane mode just to eliminate the possibility before buying tubes. Though having some extras around is never a bad idea. They are like light bulbs, one is going to go sooner or later.

The attached video from Doc is a great place to start your trouble shooting! Just be careful if playing around the insides of the amp - a lot of stored energy in there!

I can't believe I missed this on the main site. I took the back panel off and checked the tubes after powering it up and taking it off standby. One of my power tubes appears to be arching. It keeps flickering "blue" and when it does that the amps makes the loud static and popping sounds. I tested this making sure there were no phones or Ipads in the room just to err on the side of caution.

I would take this amp to a tech to make sure that no other damage has occurred due a failing power tube. It'd be minor damage, if any damage at all, but it'd give you peace of mind and protect the amp for years to come.

Sounds like a power tube to me, especially if you seeing commensurate fireworks inside of it.

My vote is on the power tube as well.

Wow..it is hard to find someone to look at amps in the area. But I found a guy and he confirmed that it was the power tube that failed. No other damage was done due to the tube failing. So you guys hit it on the head there. It took a while because he was backed up with work and I finally got the amp back home today. Wow...I missed the tone from the Nova.
