I really dig the A Type in my Magnatone, but I want to set up another Z 1x12 with an American Type Speaker. The Z12 intrigues me and have been thinking of buying one. Still looking for a Z 1x12 Cabinet as well. The Doc floored me with the Z28 MKII and I’m equally impressed with the Modern Z 1x12 Cabs. I have it loaded with an Eminence Ceramic Red Fang.

I have never played with an A type. But I can endorse the Z12. I have two of them (Cure and Z Plus). Both amps sound incredible with those speakers!

I have both the A type and the Z-12. The Z-12 sounds much better than the A type. My opinion of the A type is that is has harsh highs. It also doesn't seem to produce harmonic overtones. It feels disconnected to my playing, kind of lifeless. The Z-12 sounds inspiring. I'm not good at describing the way a speaker sounds, but the highs aren't harsh. The bass seems tight. It just sounds balanced. I've had the A type for about 3 years and I really don't like that speaker. I have a Z-Lux and the Z-12 is a perfect match for it.

I think I was being a little harsh on the A-type speaker. I wanted to explain myself. I've been playing for a long time and toured in my 20's. I've played in churches for over 20 years. I had both the A-type and a Z-12 in my Blues Jr. I also ran the speaker from this chasis into the Z-Lux. In the Blues Jr, the A-type really needed some compression in order to carry it when I was playing with the Blues Jr. I have an Xotic SP compressor that I run on 18 volts and it balances out that speaker. Without the compression, it seems to lack aspects of EQ, which makes it feel like it's blanketed. But with the Z-12 in the Blues Jr, I didn't need compression. The sound was very well balanced and rich. The speaker pushes uniformly. The high end is accessible but not harsh or ice-picky. The lows are punchy and tight. The A-type seems to have a harsh high end and the low end isn't punchy or tight. It's kind of a round sound. I wouldn't say it resembles flabby lows of the silver face era, which to me is terrible. The A-12 speaker reminds me of a Kendricks 12" speaker that Gerald Weber designed for the Texas sound. His brother was my roommate, so we had prototypes of his amps in our apartment in the 90's in Austin. It was a little loose in the low end, with a muddy sound. Maybe it's a certain style that both these speakers are aiming for. To me, the A-type made the Blues Jr not sound as much like a Fender. It seemed to be missing a sort of excitement that I got from listening to the Fender sound. And I know the Blues Jr is a $600 amp (I've had mostly high end Fenders and Marshalls), but it sounds great when paired with certain speakers. Here's something to try. I just reconfigured all my speaker cabs and amps to 8 ohms. I put the 2 16 ohm speakers I had in my Z-Lux cabinet and run them parallel. Now, I can hear 3 speakers separately with the 3 amps I have, the ones that are in my Blues Jr, my Marshall studio Jubilee and the TT 1x12 cab. I can mix and match them. Of course, they are affected by the cabinet that they reside in. I have my Z-12 in a TT Cabs custom 1x12 cabinet designed to the specs of a Z 1x12. When I put that speaker in the cabinet, I could tell it wasn't coming out. I listened over a period of a week and it consistently sounded perfect with the Z-Lux and running it from the 1x12 cab into the Blues Jr. It sounded perfect in the Blues Jr chasis too. It had a slightly more raw vibe in that one, because the back is very open and the amp is made of particle board like material (mfp?). To me, there are some advantages to this material. It doesn't color the tone. The new TT cab has a 1/3 open slot, like the Z 1x12 that I utilize. The sound of the Z-12 is tighter in this cabinet. I also paired it with a G12H 30 in the Z-Best and it sounded good in there, but I think the G12H 30 was overpowering, in my opinion. You should just buy a Z-12. You won't be disappointed. Also, there are so many incredible speakers on the market today. The Jensen Blackbird intriques me the most. The Fain A60 and F70 must be incredible speakers as well.

I just replaced my Z 1x12 with another Z 1x12 and I was surprised it came with a Z12. I had no intention of leaving the Z12 in because I was set on using another speaker. I was blown away though, the Z28 MKII Proto into the Z12 was amazing. Most Eminence offerings in the “American” Voices are high wattage speakers and IMHO are usually too dark, or lack character only because you can get them to move without getting really loud, or pushing it hard. For a guitar player that uses pedals the Z28 is just an amazing amp and the Z12 is a sturdy 12 that has a beautiful bottom end, and clear top end, with a midrange that doesn’t get in the way of of the amp or your overdrive pedals. Your not fighting or compromising with the speaker to project the colors your putting into it. I am thoroughly enjoying it and believe in my heart of hearts that it will be sticking around for a long time. Thanks DRZ for this fantastic speaker. I hear things coming out of this speaker that I hadn’t been getting with my Celestions and my search for an American voiced speaker that isn’t 150watts or 20lbs (EV) to rest.
