first rough mix of a track. appreciate you taking a listen and noting anything that sounds off or wrong or just bad. My ears are shot and i can no longer hear certain details at lower volumes but then the mids and highs start to distort as soon as the volume gets over 45db. It sucks. i let the engineer have free rein on the mix just to hear what he was capable of. we'll probably sit down and re-mix with input from the band.
we transferred all of the tracks from my Tascam to our engineer's laptop and imported into ProTools. We'll continue tracking parts through the same mic/pre setup but into Protools instead of the Tascam. Still have five tracks left to finish guitar parts and then two needing vocals. les paul into ghia with some OD pedals in the chain. the engineer threw this mix together on his own.

Cool groove. And, you get some nice dynamics across the different sections. I didn't hear any misses. Sounded pretty tight especially given that the rhythm is complex.
Mix-wise, I'd experiment with the level of delay/reverb to see if creating more space enhances or detracts. The keyboard part isn't getting its own place, and I think it's nice offset to the guitar licks. I had to listen hard to see if there was actually a keyboard there. (I think there is.) Speaking of space, I'd also experiment with some panning. One of the best pieces of advice I got was from a former bass player who told me to think of the song/mix as a painting, and that I should consider using the entire canvass (because in my case, he said I was only painting in the center of the canvas).
I think you have a nice piece of work going there. And, the guitar tone sounds Z-antastic!

Ian,
That sounded great! It was quite the journey, I expected as much, and I prepared myself for the ride.

You know the drill - once the lap bar comes down you are committed to the ride. I kept my arms and legs inside the vehicle, but my head traveled to some fun places! Very cool stuff here Ian - please continue to share your material!

Hey! I have to say your track influenced my next track. After listening, I happened to go in to do some editing on my tune and thought "Need a little more energy across the sonic landscape". Also, do you do your own mastering at the end or send it out. I started using Steve at www.SageAudio.com a number of years back. It's relative inexpensive (now $54/track). I do my own mixing and love trying to model and/or reverse engineer. After getting the first tunes back from Steve, I reversed engineered the EQ & loudness and was very proud of myself. Well, that was until I played my versions for my wife and my bandmates who just looked at me, shook their heads, and said "Mike - You can't hear the difference?". Just thought I'd throw that out. It really does make a difference. And, I've tried some of those automatic ones (e.g. Landr.com and others) where you load it into the cloud and hit 'process'. They don't compare.
