Looking to complete the triumvirate of phase, chorus, and flanger. Which Flanger do you have/like. I’m using a MXR Phase 95 and a Boss CE2-w. Not looking to break the bank, however, I do like a bit of control and wide range in the sound. Not interested in digital/multi pedals. ME

I do like the Mr. Black Shepards End. It's unique in that it's a "Barbershop Pole" type flanger where you can have the sweep continuously going in one direction. Either up or down. New, they run about 200 or so, but you can sometimes get them for the 150 - 160 range. It's a cool pedal.
I know you said that you aren't interested in multi-effect pedals. However I also like the Empress Nebulus as well. It has a high amount of control. It has Chorus, Flange and Vibrato. Has three versions of each. You can set up to 8 presets with it. And the presets don't have to be any particular effect either. So you could have 8 preset flanger settings. Along with an extra setting with the current settings on the pedal. According to the Empress site the effects are digital but maintains an analog dry-through. Not sure if you would be interested in that one at all but throwing that one out there as well. It runs a little under 300 new, but you can get them used for around 220. I actually got mine used at a steal price of around 180 or so. It is a cool highly flexible and easy to use pedal. Plenty of youtube demo videos of it out there if you are halfway interested in checking it out.

i would think Electro Harmonix would have a few analog flange pedals. I believe the Electric Mistress. Had a 70's version back in the day.

Some highly-regarded non-digital options: MXR M117R, Boss BF-2, Electro-Harmonix Stereo Electric Mistress, A/DA Reissue Flanger, ThorpyFX CAMOFLANGE, Toadworks Barracuda... and I'm sure the list goes on.
Take your pick--it's a swirling madness (you like what I did there?) of offerings out there.

What don’t you like about the Phase 95? I found that to be very good, able to get a couple of the classic MXR tones without much fuss.

My 2 cents: 1. Have a mxr block logo from the 80's. I think it sounds great, but it's pretty noisy. Also, have to use a 3-2 ground adapter thing to get rid of the ground loop. I hardly every use it, but it has that Vh sound, and a lot of nice, thick modulation, not unlike a chorus pedal. It's a very pronounced effect, and the new ones might be worth looking at and aren't a ton of money. 2. Every digital flange thing I've every tried to sounds rancid to me. Throw the old boss flanger in that scenario too. 3. I would look hard at Electric Mistress, or some derivation of it. I had a friend with one of the original ones and I thought it sounded like crap, but that was probably late 70's in a Randall transistor amp, so there you go. Will post a clip below that is out of the norm Police stuff. I also had an original memory man from back then and though it sounded crappy too (and it really just screwed up your tone just running through it). 4. I have a Fulltone choral/flange, and am not exactly enamored with that one, but I can kind of make it work. (sample below). 5. I found an original ada flanger that should be on the way soon. Nothing seems to sound like that one, and they are crazy expensive these days. I'm just looking to make wacky sounds with that one (another sample below). Mistress sample MXR (I think this was an ada on the original) youtube.com/clip/Ugkx9-U-EBsoHV4EgteJENPrazyA0znKZSfIADA youtube.com/clip/Ugkx-HfRkEfiX9eRT4hJumcwFeJ5n1B9Ph0eADA 2 - this one is a good general reference youtube.com/clip/UgkxLWLSZw0RUr28RtdjLKoceAqY6WY3TuIj

I’ve owned a TC Electronics SCF since the 80’s. Thing has been gold for me, but I use it for chorus predominantly. Nonetheless it has a flanger that can get pretty radical. Mine has the hardwired ac cord. They recently released the SCF Gold reissue with some improvements, particularly standard 9v power input. I would recommend checking the demos. Not for everyone but I like it.

I've owned a lot of flangers trying to replicate my late 70's MXR. I have the same one Adam refers to. None of them came close until I tried the MXR EVH Flanger. If you want the sound of that old gray box MXR, don't waste your money on others (including the new MXR gray box and the Micro Flanger....IMO).
Adam.....I sent my old MXR to Protronics in OKC and he did a great job on it. Lowered the noise floor and replaced the filter caps in the a/c power circuit. I can't remember his name but when I called, the owner answered.....real nice guy. Highly recommended.

I've got the MXR M117R, and it's the first and only flanger I've ever owned. I rarely use it, but it gets the job done when I do. I just opened mine up (I got it out to check for this thread) because something was rattling around inside. It turned out to be the battery plugs, two 9 volters. This one is a surface-mount PCB, modern pick-n-place construction. I'd love to see a gut shot of the flangers from the '70s.

I'd love to see a gut shot of the flangers from the '70s. Here ya go Dave. 78 or 79 MXR gray box. I'll add that I think Protronics replaced the foot switch and filter caps. Not sure if they replaced any other components. I'm pretty sure all of the chips are original.

With all the regulations today, I bet that design would never make it to market. I miss the good 'ol days when people could market amps that would shock you if the ground switch wasn't set right...

I just recently picked up the ThorpyFX Camoflange that Mark mentioned in his post. That is one excellent flanger. Really versatile and you can definitely get those vintage flanger tones out of it.

I have a Retro-sonic Fla ger and a PastFX Elastic Mattress V3 for the Electric Mistress flanger sounds.
The Retro-sonic is just amazing and blows away the PastFX EM. The PastFX is thin and brittle in comparison to the Retro-sonic.
The V3 EM is "stereo" but it's useless for me as it is out of phase and sounds terrible. And I'm not about to get another device to fix a poor design choice.
The Retro-sonic also sounds great as a chorus like Andy Summers
