Hello all I have been on quite a journey with this amp, and would like any advice you guys can give. About 5 years ago I was playing a maz 18 nr. I found the amp incredibly bright with a celestion gold and my tele. I went with a cannabis Rex for a while, but there were still frequencies that I didn’t really dig. Eventually traded it for a z28 1x10 with an eminence red fang. Eventually added the eminence cv-65 to add a little depth. This setup to me was just too much in the mids, and I found myself missing the clear tone of my old fenders. Recently I switched for the cv-65 to the celestion v type with the red fang, and eventually to just the v type. Really like this speaker, much more balanced. Have been trying to find a 10” for the combo and got a eminence copperhead. Oh my god, love the feel, added highs, tamed the bass. Made me realize how much I prefer American style speakers. So now I am looking for a 12” American style speaker for this amp. 98-99 efficiency would be ideal. I am thinking Jensen c12n or Weber 12f150. Does anybody have any experience with American speakers in the z28. Right now mixing the copperhead and v type, but they are so different that I am not digging them as much together. Would love to see if anyone has any experiences with brighter American 12” speakers with the z28. Love this amp, and I can see that slight tweaks would make it so much better for me.
Thanks in advance Dave

I always thought the best 12" speaker for the Z-28 was the Celestion G12H-30--technically a British speaker, but it has a tendency to work well in American amps like the Deluxe Reverb, for example. Tied for that top spot, too, is also the Tone Tubby 40/40 ceramic (similar profile to my ears as the G12H-30). However these speakers are both very efficient (LOUD!).
I did try the Weber 12F150 in my Z-28 back in the day, but it lost its shootout with the G12H-30. Can't remember specifically what I like or didn't like... but I don't think it "fit" the amp's profile.
My best suggestion if you want to go American-ish and lower efficiency would be to try the Eminence Texas Heat. (Better yet, if you want to lighten it up, go with a Lil' Texas neo--I've tried it too, also sounds great.)

I've liked the Weber F and A models and the Eminence Red, White and Blue on the 12" side.

I’ve always stayed away from the G12H30 because I figured the big bass would be too much with this amp, as it can be too much easily with other speakers. May have to give one of these a shot though, as I keep hearing people suggest it. Texas heat is on my short list for this amp. Thanks for the input!

I've liked the Weber F and A models and the Eminence Red, White and Blue on the 12" side. I'm currently very happy with a Z 2x10 cab with (efficient!) C-Rex 10's. The stock Z 10's were also fine but I wanted the cab at 4 ohms. If money were no object on the 10" side, I'd have a pair of Weber 10A125s. Yeah the Weber 12F150 seems like a speaker I would like in the amp. Was not a fan of the 12” cannabis Rex with the amp though. Felt like it didn’t get bright enough. Been very interested by the red white and blue too, but had heard some people say the top was not bright or clear enough. Thanks for the input. I have seen you be a big supporter of American speakers with the amp.

I have a Z12 in my Z-Plus. Plugged it in to my Z-28 head and was quite taken back at how it really brought out the "American" tones of the amp. The Z12 really sounded nice with the Z-28.

I'll add a vote for the Texas Heat or Lil Texas. I prefer the Texas Heat. If you're looking for slightly more highs and slightly less lows, go with the Lil Texas. The Swamp Thang is a bit more "American" than the Texas Heat. Also a lot heavier magnet. If you want speaker breakup, it's not the one. If you want clean Fenderish snap, it's nice.

I have seen you be a big supporter of American speakers with the amp. I have a 12" CR and have it paired with a Gold in a 2x12 cab. I refer to it as my Acapulco Gold cab and it is one of my all time favorite 2x12 speaker combinations. The gold fills in the missing pieces of the CR and vice versa. I found the 10" CRs to be unlike the 12" version. The 10's are well balanced with no missing pieces to fill in. Obviously all just personal taste. Good luck on your search.

I actually used a gold and Cannabis Rex together with my maz. Was my favorite combo with that amp. Thank you for the comments, they are helpful as I examine this. Bet those 10” speakers sound great.

I have not tried doc’s z12, but I have tried the RWB, Texas Heat, C Rex, Canis Major, and I have and tried the TT40/40, G12H30. IMHO the Eminence Speakers in the “American” sounds are just to many watts are built to stay pretty stiff.
I purchased the Celestion A Type because I wanted an American Tone, but in a speaker with some character the would work well with my amp. The speaker won me over, with the cleans, and overdrive which is a tall order. I don’t feel like it’s a compromise in either department.

I have used a couple G12H30 type speakers with Fender clones and they do sound surprisingly a lot like the Weber 12F150 speakers I normally used with the clones. Not exactly the same, but much closer than I was expecting. I think the 12H or their ilk would be a good one to try. I also tried the Z12 with my Z28 a few times and liked it, but didn't love it. However, this was at home and not playing with the band.
I recently put a Celestion V-type in one of my Z 1x12 cabs with the Z28 and liked it, but had to bring the bass all the way down and treble up to 3:00.
This coming Saturday I'll gig the Z28 and try the Celestion Green back again. It didn't sound great at home, but I remember really liking it mixed with the band.

Add another vote for the Emi Lil Texas Neo. I don't have a Z28, but I have that speaker in my Cure and Nova.

Thanks for all your comments. I took a plunge on a Weber 12f150, and we will see what I think of it vs the v type. I really do like the v type. May need to find another 1x12 cabinet for both flavors. Will report back on my feelings when the Weber arrives.

A nice speaker. Make sure you give it plenty of break-in time before judging it.

Good luck with the Weber davecarb ! I'm beyond pleased with the Jensen Blackbird 40 that I just installed in my Jetta combo. It is doing the American tone i wanted and remains tight with drives, delays, verbs, and so on. Has an Alnico chime if you're into that. And is much lighter than most.

Well I have had a little time with my new 12f150B and I really like it. I like it even more mixed with the copperhead. I am very happy so far and the amp is much more versatile to me like this. Have 12F150 on its way too, so we will shoot that out with the 12F150B and decide which one I like more with the amp. Thanks for all your comments!
