I know this amp is amazing for its cleans and srv sound, esc. but I just wanted to say I bought this amp on a whim, traded alot of stuff for it. and it fits perfect for what I do. my band plays a few pretty heavy songs and the ezg keeps up perfectly, I absolutley love the sound it has, I use a modded rat kinnatone and many other pedals but my les paul and that rat are my main sound when playing and it's unique and does its thing. so, for anyone wondering if this amp can do more than just fender like cleans. it's its own monster. I like that I'm playing hard stuff with it cause it doesn't sound like every other hard rock band with a marshall. I've played it next to a 100watt marshall and I still think the ezg sounded better. least in my opinion and the rest of my band.

That amp is a monster and the speaker in the combo is perfect for all styles with the right pedals. I can easily see copping metal or doomed out fuzz with it due to its punch. Congrats on finding one!

I used the EZG on an outdoor gig last year and got tons of compliments on the sound. Ran it through a Z 1x12 with a creamback (open), mostly played a Les Paul and about 30% strat. The reason I chose that was #1 I was playing super clean most of the time, but the way it reacted with my revival drive pedal made for a Marshall type sound that I thought was great. Basically dialed int the les Paul for how I wanted it, then turned on a gigity pedal when using the strat to make that sound right against the LP settings. Simple, small footprint, and worked fantastically and covered a lot of ground.
If you read the Ted Templeman book, a lot of those great sounds they got were an old Bandmaster (I think), with some odd Fender 4x12, cranked up. Point being they wanted a sound that wasn't like a Marshall sound everyone else was using. So kind of to your second point, and the EZG can get a cool, unique distorted sound too when cranked up.

Congrats on finding one! That Rola Celestion g12-65 is a killer sounding speaker in that amp. Punch is a great way to describe it. Super clean. Well balanced. Not overly loud. Let's you drive the amp a little. Definitely worth a shot if you haven't tried one.

I'm pretty sure it is the EZG Combo's stock speaker from the factory. It's spot on for that amp imo! Doc always does a great job selecting a speaker match-up for his amps.

I can't say I've ever a/b'ed my creamback with the Rola. Here's a vid comparison on the Rola g12-65 vs the Creamback g12m-65. Maybe it'll help.
