Got a sweet deal on a 2017 mint condition Cure. ($1000). It came with a C-Rex speaker. I bought it primarily to keep at my rehearsal space but after about an hour of play time I quickly realized this would be a great small club gigging amp. Going to give it a go at a gig this weekend. I swapped out C-Rex with a V-Type and it's staying in for now. Has anyone that has an older Cure swapped tubes to the current spec and if so what improvement did it make? I realize it requires a bias resister change and am wondering if it's worth the effort.

Congrats and welcome to the Cure Club! It's been my main gig amp since I bought it new in the first year of production.
I used a C-Rex in mine and it sounded great. I only swapped it to a Lil Buddy to shave a few lbs as it's a NeoD speaker.
As for tubes, I run NOS across the board, but I stick to the tubes that Doc recommends in each position. Mine is like yours and uses the older spec tube set. I like it as-is.

Welcome to the club! I love my Cure! It's the amp that I turn to when I just want to play some music! Telecaster->Cure->Flint in loop (sometimes). It gives my more expensive amps a run for their money.
I have the original Dr. Z speaker in mine as I think it's a great match. I also have the original tube setup- 2 12AX7s, 1 12AT7, 2 6V6s, and a 5Y3 (oops! I meant 5AR4!) and have no plans to change that. I like the grit this amp provides and have no need for more headroom or a different sound. I use this amp where I used to use a tweed Deluxe clone.

I have a spare 5Y3. Maybe I'll swap it out in my spare time just for giggles.

It's a great lightweight that punches like a heavyweight! I've used it with the jazz band a lot live and it never lets me down. Lots of good tones in there, you're gonna love it.

I’m sure I missed it, but what was the reason people started putting 5881 tubes in the cure instead of the 6v6’s?

I’m sure I missed it, but what was the reason people started putting 5881 tubes in the cure instead of the 6v6’s? Dr. Z made the changeover on amps at the factory (last year?). It requires a bias resistor value change. If I recall, it was due to the rejection rate of recent 6V6 power tubes. I believe it's the third different tube lineup used in the Cure.

I've gigged the Cure a lot. I had it put into a head cab and tried many speakers in the combo and in the separate cabinet. Also tried different tubes. It really does sound best to me in the original combo cab, with the original Z12 speaker, with the original brands and types of tubes.

I have the original cure. Love it. I did try different speakers but returned to the original.

So you are getting nice big, clean jazz tones out of it? This amp seems so great but the YouTube videos are all new country oriented

The Cure is really versatile so it all depends how you set up the Volume, Master, and Level (Plus Treble, Mid, and Bass of course). You can get pretty much whatever you want out of it.
