my band has built out a makeshift studio in our rehearsal space and have been busy recording our first cd of originals.
all the bass and drum tracks are complete along with scratch guitar parts for 10 songs. now i'm going through each song, redoing the rhythm parts and adding solos and additional rhythm (color) tracks as needed. for the overdubbing, the ghia is 2 rooms away with an sm57 on it. i'm sitting in the "control" room with our engineer, Gino, who conveniently lives in the house where we rehearse. I'm running into a Dumble style overdrive pedal and then into the ghia. You're hearing my Zoom 2Qn built-in mic's picking up the studio monitor output. Gino has good skills, ears and the perfect temperament to be an audio engineer. Just watch me put his patience to the test trying to knock out this solo.

That's funny, I can relate on both sides. You could try a couple things, one being play a solo and if the beginning is good, keep that and punch the next phrase, and so on. The other is you could just do a bunch of solos and have him comp it, but that' really hit or miss and takes you out of the equation. #1 is better, but you need that guy to tell you when something is good and something is bad. After you do that stuff enough, you begin to hear things like 10 punches in a Van Halen solo.

That’s too much fun Ian. I loved watching Gino’s body language ( for lack of a better term) go from enthusiasm to fatigue. Loved yours as well. Been there, so I appreciate the effort. Thanks for sharing. Great fun.

Sounds pretty good. I track a lot of the drums, keys, and sometimes bass at my drummers house. And, then I take the tracks home and do the guitars and vocals. So, I think it's a little strange that I'll sit by myself in my little home studio replaying and replaying things until I find the groove.
It's hard for me to wrap my brain around someone else sitting there while I'm doing that. That's pretty cool that you guys can groove!

Here's a clip of some clean tones. I have Ts9 set to clean boost to push the preamp tube. the amp vol is at 8-9 o'clock.

I know I'm an over-sharer so, thanks for listening again. I always feel like that too, but I think these things are fun and helpful. We're all in the same game.
