I have wanted a flying V since I was a teenager and despite my lack of hair and gorgeous physique, I still wanted one, but didn't want to spend a ton. I love cheap guitars that have good bones and I get them used for cheap, dress the frets, tighten things up like tuners etc, and get them playing great and then upgrading pickups.
I was able to find a Dean V select in the blue quilt top for $500 basically new locally on craigslist. I have never played a Dean, but figured what the heck, I can set up the guitar and swap out the pickups if the frets are good and the neck wasn't twisted. Played it at dude's house and was really amazed at how good it felt in my hands.
This guitar has become one of my favorite guitars ever due to the v shaped neck and overall resonance of the guitar unplugged. My thinline tele and Brad Paisley tele are like this; just so acoustically loud that they just sound amazing, and this Dean is louder than both somehow. It came with some duncans and it occurred to me that I have never owned, or even played a guitar with p90s. Sacrilege I am sure. I ordered some duncan phat cats, stuck them in, and I think that this indonesian battle axed shaped guitar might be my favorite guitar (for now at least).
Anyone else here dig the phat cats? I did a lot of reading about them and read they are not "real" p90s, but what is a real p90 is different from person to person I guess. I dig them and through the z wreck jr, it is quite a sound. Just amazing.

I had a pair of phat cats in a Les Paul Classic. I really liked it for quite a while. I ended up taking the bridge phat cat out and put a Lollar Imperial in.
It's one of my best sounding guitars now, when running both pups at the same time. It's a great combo.

I have two sets of Phat cats. I like the combo Roger has with a phat cat in the neck and a humbucker in the bridge. I prefer a P-90 in the neck position. Mine have been switched through several guitars over the years. The combo of one of them in the neck of a Tele with a hot bridge pickup was wonderful. Currently have a bridge model in the middle position of a three pickup LP custom.

I was a Hamer endorser and Jol built me a thin hollow body with PhatCats and it sounded amazing! My son has the guitar now. I sure do mis it….

Phat Cats are great! They don't sound exactly like a P-90...a little less growl, but still snappy and articulate. A good in-between-single coil-and-humbucker choice.

I put a set in my Made in Japan Epiphone Les Paul Custom (domestic sale only model) that I bought back when I was living there. Love the grind I get out of them pushing a cooking tube amp. I think they sound great.
