I'm looking for a reverb pedal to replace the Keeley Caverns on one of my boards. The Caverns is a nice pedal. However, the spring sounds aren't the best imo (that's where I'm at 80% of the time), I don't need delay (I have the CarbonCopy Deluxe on the board), and I'd like a couple presets.
I want a great spring sound. I want some capability to do ambient washy stuff along with shimmer, swell in is a plus. A nice room sound. And some presets to go between the three.
I need something around the same size as the Caverns, so Bigsky is out.
I have a Blue Sky on on another board. It's great but I don't want to duplicate. Also, only has two sounds that you can quickly switch between. I have a Dispatch Master as well. That's a good sounding pedal. Doesn't fit the bill for this one.
In the running: Walrus Audio Mako R1 and Source Audio Ventris (the Ventris is slightly ahead at this point).
Any experience with these? Any other suggestions??

The Topanga is about the best spring based digital I’ve come across.

Spring on the Neunaber Immerse is good, not great. However, bang for the buck, overall variety and quality of sounds, plus a "bonus delay" setting make it a great pedal overall. Also takes up a single space. Hope that helps!

Not a spring but I do have a WET that I’ve used for years with my non reverb Z’s. Neumaber makes good stuff.

If you want presets check out the Illumine from Neunaber. Looks like a slick pedal! Have you tried it? No. I have the Immurse and a couple versions of the WET. They are great. I've actually had a bunch of his pedals. I can only imagine the Illumine being like a greatest hits of all the excellent Neunaber reverbs. He used to make a switching pedal called the EXP that had 2 foot switches on it. It would plug into any of his small Expanse series of pedals with a TRS cable. Your could store 4 differemt algorithms and have two presets for each algorithm. It really opened up his simple small 3 knob pedals. It was pretty cool but I didn't see it on his website. Not sure if it's discontinued. I used to have one and it worked great. That's another option if you went used. Expanse + EXP. No affiliation, just an example Reverb pedal on reverb

Catalinbread Topanga really sounds as good, if not better than the spring reverbs in my 'verbed amps. However, The Catalinbread Talisman is a GREAT reverb pedal. Although it's a plate simulation, not spring.

Although it's a plate simulation, not spring. Looks like the Topanga and Talisman are getting high marks as well. Thanks for all the suggestions! I've been listening to the different algos in the Ventris on YouTube, and it's sounding really good. It should cover the spring, plate, room, and much more. No menus to drive which I like. However, it seems you can get adventurous and dive into a computer or mobile editor if desired. As far as options to cost effectiveness, the all in one's like the Illumine and Ventris win out IF they sound as good. They seem to, but I cannot tell from YouTube videos. The only problem with the Illumine is that I don't see that they are available anywhere. I'm going to have to just pull the trigger here. Seems like the Ventris makes the most sense at this point.

The J Rockett Boing is a nice spring reverb pedal. Very subtle effect. By that I mean the knob has to be turned up over half way at least. The control has a slow taper to it. Nice effect though. Not overbearing at all. Doesn’t get in the way. I no longer have the pedal but that’s how I remember it.

Here I go again touting the Line 6 M5. First of all it may have a larger footprint than you would like. But there are a LOT of great sounds in that box for $150. Surprisingly nice 'verbs and echos for the price. On top of that are lots of other vintage effects that you might have a use for once in a while but don't want to spend the money for them all. The M5 is still on a lot of studio guitarists boards for a good reason. It also has 24 easily programmable and stored presets. I own two.

My favorite spring reverb pedal is the Vahlbruch Spring Theory. Second favorite is the Neunaber Immerse (which has way more functionality).

I have a Empress Reverb pedal on my worship music board. It has a ton of sounds and has programmable presets.
It's pretty expensive, but it's incredible. I was using a spring setting, but moved to the plate sound, which I really like.
I did recently get a Wampler Reflection Reverb pedal, that I use into a M12, for my original band. It's a good always on pedal. I like that it has predelay and tone knobs.

Yes, it's really good. It also has delay, octave, tremolo and some other affects. But the Reverb sounds are stellar.
Empress has some good demos on YouTube, for different settings. Check out the spring and plate demos.

Ventris will be here today. I'm going to get it dialed in this week and take it to jam night this weekend. I'll see how it does!
The Topanga just doesn't cover enough ground for me. But I may need to pick one up just to check it out. It seems to be the way to go for a stand alone spring verb tone.
Thanks for all the suggestions!

to the OP: Are you planning on using it in an effects loop or before the amp? I have a Topanga and can recommend it. Because it's an emulation of an outboard reverb unit, it's intended to be in front of the amp. I found a few others to sound tinny and a little digital in front (though they may be fine in an effects loop).
The Strymon Flint is another good option.

I found a few others to sound tinny and a little digital in front (though they may be fine in an effects loop). The Strymon Flint is another good option. I'm going in front. I never use an effects loop because when I run a board, I set my amps clean"ish" and push overdrive with pedal stacking. So the wet effects sound pretty good in the front. I have heard the Flint and I like it. I'm sure the Topanga does a great spring as well. However, I'm looking for a little more options than either of these have. I'm hoping the Ventris will cover my spring sounds, give me a light room sound for high gain, have a big hall sound for come clean washing stuff, and have a shimmer for pad and background effects. There are some cool control options for presets and reverb stacking. Also, can add a footswitch assignable latching effect. Create a pad sound and then play over it, both pad hold and play over can have the reverb effect of your choice. Many options that I'm hoping will sound good with straight ahead rock and blues, but also open the door for some more inspiration and a bit of a different flavor. Honestly, I used to shy away from that stuff. But more and more, I'm finding great inspiration from what many would consider less traditional sounds.

I currently have a flint, Ventris, R1, and an 18 yr old EH holy grail. They are all cool for various reasons, the holy grail has the best sound for a band mix IMO. Needs to be into a clean amp.
The ventris is cool because the spring is pretty good, and you can set the option button to toggle to a more ambient verb. I use e-dome for a spacey ambient 2nd option.
The R1 is super awesome for trippy type sounds, but the always on spring/hall type sounds are less realistic. The sustain button is so cool to setup a pad to jam over, but It also is a small footprint and scary to use live because fat feet will change presets instead of hitting only one of the buttons. That being said, I REALLY like the bfr, refract, and air settings so I still have the pedal.
The flint is awesome on all three settings and my preferred verb, even though the EH is a little more organic sounding. If that word even makes sense, the EH just seems to sit under the mix better like a fender type sound instead of sounding like an effect. For live use they’re all probably pretty good, I’m just a basement player for the last decade or so.
All just my opinions, hope this useful.
