On and off again I wanted an M12, but I came across one before my morning coffee could kick in and could not resist.

Congrats on a great purchase! Those M12s are fun little amps! I have the one that Doc described as the best one he ever made!

You owe it to yourself to give it a spin with a 5AR4

You owe it to yourself to give it a spin with a 5AR4 That’s a fact. Transforms the entire amp.

I just put a 5AR4 in my M12 last night. I did a little test drive and it definitely gave it some more headroom. I didn't try it with a full band jam yet.
Not sure why I waited so long to try it. Pretty sure it's a nice improvement if your into cranking the amp.

Indeed the 5AR4 was definitely an improvement. The short and skinny: If you love the Z28 but want a bit more edge/ brightness then this is the perfect amp for you. Still articulate, bigger bottom end than and headroom than the Ghia. I thought my pedals felt better with the bigger rectifier. I feel that the Recto upgrade brings it to a whole new level.
Not 100% sure I’m going to keep it, I’m conflicted at the moment with all these amps in the house.

If you dig the 5AR4, I have a secret rectifier that I think is even better. NOS. Inexpensive. Very uncommon but easy to find if you know what to look for. But don’t want to post publicly and let the supply get eaten up. If anyone is interested, PM me.

I was going to hold off for the Z28mkII release. I'm curious what your opinion is on having one over the other. The M12 has more chime than the Z28. Any other differences, strengths, weaknesses, etc.?

Any other differences, strengths, weaknesses, etc.? Well I wouldn’t hold your breath for a MKII release anytime soon. So if you are in the marked for a Z28 or M12, the best case it to choose which you prefer EL84’s or 6v6’s. Setting up the M12 with the 5AR4 puts it on par with the Z28 volume wise, they both will get gritty pushed at higher volumes and get cleaner at lower volumes. The M12 will have more cut and IMHO for most will work a little better at lower volumes being a brighter amp. The Z28 has a little more compression, both of these amps are fiercely under appreciate. I believed now that I tried it with the bigger rectifier tube its going to be hard to toss it back in the water, but I won’t dare sell off my Z28’s because I know I will regret it. If I would have found the M12 before the Z28, I would have wanted a Z28 to compare so in a perfect world you may need both. LOL 😝 Speakers, holy moly the most overlook part of the equation, you need to keep at least a couple options around the house at all times. Eminence, Celestion, are great speakers and if you want a quick change in tone that is the way to go. I will put my money on the Celestion V Type, A Type, and the Avatar 25 or 50. I’ve bugged the guys at Celestion for an A Type 10” but like all manufactures everyone is crazy busy and tight on materials. So “NOT AT THIS TIME” was the answer I got. Last but not least, the Air Brake, or Brake Light is your friend if things get too loud. Two clicks will yield a relief in volume, four will save a marriage, I am not a complete fanboy of everything Z, but the simplicity of these amps makes it super easy for the end user to just play, they have a familiar yet original tone, that just makes them a joy to use. FOR NOW, they are a bargain, but that will not last forever. Buy them, appreciate them, play them., enjoy them.

I'm definitely leaning toward the Z28 just because I'm favoring my 6v6 amps. Mainly the Cure and Z Plus right now at home. The Jetta is getting the love on Jam nights. I think I'll just hold off for now and see if there will be a mkII release within the next year or so. Maybe I'll get the opportunity to plug into either of these amps and give them a go until then.

My friend Doug and I crank the snot out of the Z28 MKII and the M12 Last night. They both have a place in anybodys arsenal, they just kill it. My only issue is I’m up to my ears now in Z Amps and I don’t want to let go of any of my Z28’s.

Can you change permissions on that video? I think it’s private. Unlisted would be better.

I’m so impressed with the depth and clarity of the bottom end. Not ounce of mud or boom. It’s tight and focused. Honestly if this had the Z28MKII Master they could be my only amps.

I've been kicking around different EL84 vox-ish (AC15-style) amps for the last couple of years. Came back and tried the M12 again and WOW it's a very compelling amp--exactly as you've said, the depth & clarity (and complete lack of mud) on the bottom end is impressive. Granted, it's not an AC15-style sound, but I almost don't care anymore... the M12 is just better anyway.

That's some sweet slide, there. I love the tone and feel, good job. Now you've got me jonesin' for an M12!
Not to derail but I've got a Green Rhino MKII that sounds great but mine's pretty noisy, worse than other ODs at similar drive levels. Do you notice any of that with yours?

No, I sold this one to Doug and he has been playing it for years now. Low floor noise, no issues.

So I found a matching convertible cab for the M12 and slid a few speakers in. Landed on a 16ohm Red FANG ceramic. Sounds killer!

Still searching for a Z 2x10. I dedicated the 1x12 to the Z28, but I’m in love with the M12 and the Eminence RC.
Huge Huge Z28 fanatic, but the M12/RC Combination sounds amazing.
