I've been playing around lately with settings. First of all I will say that the Level control (Master Volume) works excellently, but I did find out a while back that there is just something about keeping it at least a hair above 9 o clock. Of course like most amps, there's something about playing it at volume. I recently experimented with pushing the Level control up past noon (if volume isn't a problem at all then I would dime it), then have the Master well past noon and then using the volume as the master control to set the volume overall volume. This works with me because I'm a "pedal platform" player. Doing this gives me an excellent sounding clean to use with my pedals and opens up the OD pedals as well where they sound even better. If there are any Cure players out there experimenting with the sound this might be something to try. I know I'm definitely satisfied with it.

I like the Cure with Level Max Master 3:00 Volume 10:00 Scoop the mids and ride the treble high!
Driving the power section just sounds sweet!

I feel like all of these amps work best with the Level or PPIMV set about 9:00 minimum.
Between the Volume, Master, and Level controls, the Cure is a lot of amps! I'm coming from a tweed Deluxe clone and usually go for a grittier sound with the PI driven a bit with a high Volume and Master and low Level settings and use a dirty boost (AMZ Mini Booster) to make it dirtier, but sometimes I want more punch and clarity and lower the Volume and Master and crank the Level. It's probably the most tonefull "useable" amp I've owned (I've owned amps with better tone that weren't as useable).
I'll definitely play with the settings you guys have described.

Between the Volume, Master, and Level controls, the Cure is a lot of amps! I agree 100%! I love the Cure. I've been thinking about trying the newer power tube configuration with the 5881's. Could make a great amp even better.... You guys using the 5881's? I have a 2017 with the 6v6's.

I find the Cure to be "just right" and have no use for more headroom. As I mentioned, I'm coming from a tweed Deluxe clone, and my goal is gritty chimy sounds with a Telecaster that I can make grittier with the amp's footswitch and/or a dirty boost (or a Crowther Hot Cake with the dirt set at around 11:00) and make cleaned by either turning down my guitar or playing more lightly. Believe it or not, I also had a brand new Z Wreck Jr and preferred the Cure for these sounds and sold the Wreck!

I still use 6V6's and the original tube setup. Don't see a reason to change. Since this works for me. I do use the RCA Backplate (VT-107A) 6V6's though and NOS preamp tubes

I also fear that I may not like the 5881s as much as the 6v6s if I make the change. I believe it will require some internal modifications to get the most out of the 5881s as well. So it is harder to reverse. But, If they have one at the shop next time I go, I'm going to defiantly try it out. I have heard that the tones are all still there but it's more power and headroom. That would be nice for the times I use a full pedalboard. If I like it, I may make the change! I totally believe that you took the Cure over the Z Wreck Jr! They are both amazing but different. For you, the tone of the Cure works! Have you tried the Maz18NRmkII? I'm curios what your thoughts would be on those cleanish gritty chimy tones.

I too am sticking with the 6v6s. I've also gone 100% NOS, but have not done any "substitutions".
I like the V at 10, M wide open and L as needed (gig volume is usually 10-noon)
What a great amp!

I haven't tried a Maz 18 NR MkII, but I'd like to. It looks like it and the Cure are very closely related. They can cover similar ground to my ear, but can also sound vastly different. They really start to separate the harder you drive them. I've don't some A/B"ing" of the two lately on the chime single coil stuff and they both sound fantastic. I figured you might be into the Maz as well based on what you said. Definitely worth a shout!

I generally set my Cure to the edge of break up and then hit it with a pedal (sometimes two 😉). Such a sweet sounding little amp isn’t it?!
