Is there any pedal that can be put before or after to really super crunch up either of these pedals??? (Xotic BB/ Keeley BD-2) Thanks, John.

2 pretty different pedals.......BB = more crunch. Its a pair you would want to use together to cover all of your dirt needs....IMO. I got to use my BD 2 phat mod for the first time at a gig....last SAT.......just made me grin from ear to ear........that with an RC booster is all I think I'll ever need...........would not want to rely on the BD for big crunch though......get 'em both!

I have both. The BB is a great pedal; as 19jmm68 said, it has more gain than the Keeley BD. I recently got a Keeley Phat BD (thanks to those great clips by Jayson Chance!) and I love it. You'd never guess in a million years that it started out life as a mass produced Boss pedal. It's killer with all my Z amps. They are different sounding pedals, though. The BD is more transparent and the BB adds a little Marshall to the sound while letting your original guitar's tone and pickup selections come through. As a side note, I also use a RC boost and it's killer with all my Z's, too.

Don't have the Xotic BB, but I do have the Keeley BD2 and the Keeley TS9 plus mod. Those two pedals cover a lot of ground. And for higher gain, the BD2 into the TS9 is fantastic. These pedals sound great in all 3 of my amps (MAZ 38, Stingray, and Fender 4x10 Hot Rod Deville). Thanks JC!! The best part is compared to boutique pedals, these pricewise are a bargain. Have fun! Thanks everyone!!! Why the RC booster??? Does this add more crunch or just make it sound huge?? I do like the RC booster! I can understand the TS9 would give more crunch. Thanks John.

I just noticed that everyone here has the BD-2. What is it giving you that the BB can't??

The 2 pedals have different sweetspots.........both can get gainy, both can get clean........but in my experience, BD handles the clean to "hair" spectrem better and the BB handles the PHAT voodo chile lead tones better.............For example, last weekend we did "rock this town"........I went to my BD for the solo.......boosted for the listener so that I stood out, but not too distorted (which the BB probably would have been).........kept my tone consistent with the overall rockabilly thing.......but did what I wanted by giving me some smoothness so I could "hack" my way through it easier (lol)!
Maybe someone has a better description............

I have been listening to the websites respective sound clips for each pedal. The BD-2 is very soulful and the BB has alot of meat to it. How much crunch can you get from the BD-2?? (Van Halen, Vai, and Satch) can it go abit beyond? I guess there is nothing like getting both and living with them.

Been listening to the clips again this time with head phones. Really digging the BD-2!! Especially in the first part of the clip, before he switches pickups or hits the compressor. For my taste I think the RC boost and BD-2 would be great too. On that clip of the BD-2, instead of him switching pickups or hitting the compressor, thats when I would like to hear something just punch that BD-2 into a full out crunch. Any suggestions??? I am making progress here, please bear with me. At just under 200.00 a pop, any homework that can be done to ensure tonal satisfaction helps.
This homework, my Maz18 Jr nr, and a 1960 av Marshall 4x12 cab just gotts to sound HUGE!! Thanks John.

Man..grab a Keeley BD-2 and put an RC BEHIND it in the line, season to taste and smile, best dirt combo I have found by far. I am not even looking any longer since I got the RC and my MAZ Sr, I've had the BD-2 for a while.

6250- I have both the BB and BD-2 phat mod on my board. I think the descriptions that 19jmm68 and PDW gave are right on the money. I would add that the BD-2 is one of the best pedals for boosting chords I've played. Back to your dilemma. If I was faced with your choices based on what I know now. I would get the BB first and spend some time with to see how it fits in with what your playing. These are both great pedals and you can't go wrong either way. But I think there are more good options for OD's and boosts than there are for adjustable distortion pedals. IMHO

To add another curve, I have a DS 1 Seeing Eye Mod.................which does just fine at getting my strat to sound "phat" when I need that tone..........and I picked it up for $100. It did , for me, exactly what the BB did..........so I sold the BB and put some $ back in the GAS fund.

As I posted earlier, I've got both the Keeley BD2 & TS9. And both are great for different reasons. I recently purchased a Boss SD-1 ($44.00 Shipped). I also purchased Monte Allums 808 mod kit for this pedal which comes with a JRC4558D IC, also puchased the Burr Brown IC, and the Bleed Fix mod (all parts $47.00 Shipped). I did all of the individual mods including the 2x gain mod. I left the clipping asymmetrical when replacing the diodes. So for a total of $91.00 and a couple of hours of my time, I have an astoundingly good sounding pedal. More gain, punch and volume than the Keeley TS9 and less of the mid hump. This thing covers the higher gain stuff very well. It is more gainy than the TS9, but with mucho clarity, and definition. I prefer the Burr Brown IC, as it seems to have a flatter, more neutral frequency response. Compared to the stock pedal, It's like the blanket has been pulled off the speakers. Unbelievable difference. Don't get me wrong, I love both the Keeley's I have, and both will stay on my board, especially the BD2. But for the mid to higher gain OD sounds, the modded SD-1 beats them both! This pedal after its modded is a real sleeper, and is less than used stock TS9's go for on Ebay! Harold

Hey 19jmm68 that makes me feel even better about getting the BD-2 Phat Mod! I have the Keeley DS-1 SE mod. I am very grateful for everyones suggestions and comments!! They are very helpful to me!! The more I listen to the BB, its just not what I am after. I listened to Josh Smith clips from Xotic and found for my taste the clean eh, the neck pu a very thin/wide SRV sounding type, and the bridge pu Badfinger-ish. Thats just me.
I like both Badfinger and SRV but not looking for that sound. I really like the crunch of the BD-2 Phat Mod!! It has soul/nuts. It seems if you would just push it, it has something to say. I think the RC would enhance it in many ways and maybe a tube screamer /AC would make it just bleed!! Anyone have any thoughts on what would push the BD-2 over the top while still allowing the pedal to stay true?? Thanks.

Push that pedal with a compressor. The sound won't change but it'll just sing.
