Wish I could tell you I have a big preference, but I have the JJ brand in my Z-28. The old Gibson GA-40T uses old GE’s or RCA’s.

Tung-Sol 6V6's are great. But for some Z amps specifically, you might want to stay with JJ's because they're a bit more robust both sonically and electrically. (Doc recommends sticking with them in a lot of cases).

I like the JJ's as well. 2nd choice is Tung Sol. I'm afraid that the NOS out there have been pretty well cherry picked.

I have been running the RCA Blackplate 6V6's, with the smoked glass, in my Cure and they have been going strong. I've been trying to stock up pairs of them as I can, while I still can. I like them slightly better than the JJ's. But the JJ's are still more than fine and I have a few pair of them on hand at any time.

Years ago, an NOS power tube in my tweed Deluxe clone suffered a mechanical failure. I went to a friend's house and we spent the afternoon trying many sets of NOS tubes from his stash in it. They all sounded good. Then he pulled out a set of Sylvanias and said "You can't have these, but we'll try them just for kicks". They were awesome in the amp! He said "Those tubes are staying in this amp!" He wouldn't take any money for the tubes. I left him a few old tubes from my stash. He has since passed away, but his old tubes are still rocking in my amp!
I put new Tung Sols in the Princeton Reverb clone that I built and love them.
When My Cure needs tubes, I'll replace them with the same JJs that are in the amp now.

I like JJ 6V6. All the NOS 6V6 tubes I've tried were microphonic or died very soon.

It took me a long time to get into modern 6v6s. I have Tung-Sols and Tube Doctors in a few amps and they are both really good. I don’t have any Z amps with 6v6s, however.

The JJ 6v6 have a 6L6 like construction… and sound more like 6L6’s which would be an automatic for me. I like the way they sound… more clean headroom.

Only with a well preserved, NOS example of a good old RCA Sylvania or other USA or British 6V6 are we going to get the real true authentic classic tones. New tubes use different materials and construction techniques that can't really duplicate the tone from the 50s and 60s. Those things were made by artisans, true craftsmen or craftswomen.
The new JJ 6V6 tubes have a different tone for sure but it's a great one. I can get accustomed to it (already have!) easily.

Can anyone comment on 6V6GT vs 6V6GTA?
The tube charts in 60’s amps mostly say 6V6GT from what I can see, but both of mine came with GTA’s. I replaced one matched pair with NOS Sylvania 6V6GT’s, and they sound great. The amp seems happy. Wondering if GTA are better for a brown-face Deluxe, or would it matter? It sounds good, and doesn’t seem hot, so I’m inclined to leave them.
What about Dr. Z amps? If one were to out in older tubes, would one (6V6GT/6V6GTA) be better than the other?
I have seen some information suggesting that the GTA can handle 14 watts of plate dissipation, vs. 12 with the GT, but somewhere else I read that the main difference was a slower warmup time (I think on the GTA?).
