I just got a Mini Z head after being a casual Z fan for years. I absolutely love it. I only play at home, and being in an attached condo, I can’t really play loud. I have a 1962 Deluxe, and a 1983 JCM 800 4010 combo - both of those sound stifled at condo volumes. The Mini Z has really allowed me to hear a juiced tube power stage without angering my neighbors. (The JCM was all preamp gain with the master down, and the Brownface Deluxe doesn’t break up until 4 or 5 if you dig in, and that’s too loud at home anyway anyway.)
I really wanted a 1x10 cab, but in the meantime, I’ve been using my JCM 800 combo as a speaker cab. It’s a 1982 Celestion G12-65, which I seem to have read somewhere is a bit like a higher wattage greenback. I have to say, I’m really enjoying the sounds I get out of it. I play mainly blues and classic hard rock, and some more modern alternative and a bit of punk. The Mini is great for all of them. I love the attenuator. I got out my 335 today and played a little BB King, and Clapton’s rendition of Tore Down in the middle position on the guitar, with the volume at about 9 o’clock. I love that the amp can go from a pushed, bluesy clean, all the way to saturated distortion.
So by now you get it, I really like the Mini!
I’m wondering what other Mini owners have tried as far as speakers are concerned. Has anyone ever plugged it into a 12” green back or G12-65? Any thoughts on 12” vs 10”? Ideally, I’d love to find an empty Z Combo chassis, and load it with a 10” Red Fang, Ramrod, Greenback, Gold, maybe a WGS? If anyone has thoughts on the G12-65 in comparison to these, I’d love to hear them!
Thank you, Cheers!

I don't own a Mini Z, but I have a 1982 JCM 800 4010 combo with the original Celestion G12M-65 speaker (and a place where I can play it), and I find that everything sounds great through that speaker! As great as it sounds, I think the 10" Red Fang alnico in my Monza might sound even better- fatter. But it's a much louder speaker!

Funny you should point that out - I've only played an amp with a Red Fang in person once, in a non-master volume Monz, and one takeaway I had from that experience was that it was the loudest 10" combo I had ever heard! But it did sound amazing. Given that the Red Fang has a 102 db sensitivity, I wouldn't be surprised if a 10" RF was even a tad louder than the 12" G12-65.

The first Z amp I played was about 10 years ago and was a Monza similar to mine except it had no master. It sounded awesome, but was too loud! The volume seemed to change from silent, to loud, to way too loud between 9:00 and 9:15 on the volume control!
Anyway, I find the red Fang to be louder than the G12M-65.

I got a used mini-Z head earlier this year. I got a 1x12 Z cab with a Celestion Blue. I haven’t played it through any other speaker and I honestly don’t think I want to. The blue sound so good. It breaks up but still let’s me get clean.

I'm running my Mini Z through a G12. I really enjoy it. I'm still in the break in period, but it will only get better.
