Does anyone have experience/knowledge of the 'street price' of guitars during covid? There have been some places that would give you 40% off MSRP...but you had to ask for it. ...and you didn't always get it.
But now for certain instruments, the shelves are bare. There may be a lot of lower end stuff (which is flying off the shelves), but I'm looking at a Martin acoustic, it's at Elderly in Lansing, Michigan...and I'm in central Ohio. From what I can gather, new higher end guitars are scarce and I don't know if that effects prices.
Aside from the Z forum riff-raff in the Ann Arbor/Detroit area, I have a good friend who lives just outside Ann Arbor, I will be visiting him soon, and was thinking about a trip to Elderly. But I looked on Elderly's website and it looks like they got a shipment of Martins in. They have one I want. I would buy it at the 40% off, but probably not much higher. And I'd pay cash, so that would save Elderly the CC fees.

It seems to me there isn’t much discounting going on Martins. I too am looking for a particular Martin after narrowing my choices down. I was told a story of labor shortage at Martin post their COVID shutdown that has caused a backlog in orders of about 18-24 months. This was from a Colorado dealer. Not sure what model you desire, but Melody Music near Bloomington, IN seems to have a pretty good stock. When I watched one of their D-35’s, when I thought that is what I wanted, they made me an offer of about 15% off their Reverb price. This doesn’t exactly answer your question, but it might give you some insight.

I ordered three guitar s end of December, one the Fender Strat just delivered, my custom shop LP SC Junior hope to get end this month—-and a Martin 00015 streetmaster to deliver March of 2022 !!
I did some horse trading, so price was a none issue, however I see all the major brands selling at msrp or map

It's crazy the way the supply chain is affecting production and availability of all sorts of things, worldwide. This is off topic but it's still germane. In the last couple of years I have stocked up on some ammunition, and then just a week ago I paid premium dollar for a couple of bricks of CCI .22LR ammo. I paid almost $0.11/round which is outrageous for .22LR.
It sucks but if you can afford it I'd get whatever it is that I want now. Tomorrow may be even more expensive or unobtainable.

I was in Nashville in September and 1/2 serious about buying an electric when I was there. There was nothing that spoke to me, but I played a bunch of acoustics that blew me away. The few places I stopped had a lot of variety from old stuff to new, and many brands. I know it's a ways from your neck of the woods, but I may serious consider heading back if I ever decide to get another acoustic.

I'm bringing this subject back up. From my internet research, it looks like Martin has moved from a MSRP to a MAP pricing. (MAP= minimum advertised price) Gibson made the move to MAP a while ago.
I've found a new Martin OM model I'd like to buy. But shelves are bare and it seems the price listed is the price you pay. No discounts. I have a nice stable of acoustics, but a Martin OM/OOO is the one that's missing. But man, it will be the most expensive guitar I've ever bought. (non adjusted for inflation. My 1979 LP Custom still takes reigns if you adjust for inflation.)
I emailed Elderly in Lansing and inquired whey they thought they'd get in a new shipment of Martins. They said "End of spring."

I recently heard from a dealer that Gibson and I'm pretty sure he said Martin have stopped taking orders for new guitars because they are so far behind in filling them. Thinking about it, it may have been for Martin that they had stopped for a while, so maybe they are taking them now. When demand exceeds supply, discount pricing isn't needed.

Look at Melody Music in Bloomington Indiana. They have a good stock of Martins. I’m sure I saw some OMs. Certain there were 000s. I’m not affiliated and have never purchased from them, but if I still lived in Chicago, I would probably make a road trip.

I looked at their website yesterday...they have several 000 Martins...but no OM. (000 is the same body size as OM...but 000 is short scale)
I have both long and short scale acoustics, and I think I'm partial to long scale. Thing is, I don't know if I really do prefer it, or if I'm just imagining it. And I guess I'm spooked at spending this kind of money if I'm unsure. Price of the guitar listed is $3200. And Bloomington, IN is 4 hours away, not including gas/food/piss breaks.
I have a long scale Martin dread I have a short scale Martin 00 I have a REAL short scale Larrivee parlor
So I have experience with long/short/parlor, and I like them all.

When it comes to acoustic guitars, I try not to imagine anything. I have a 000-28ec. I spent a lot of time twenty years ago going around Chicago looking for the 000 that spoke to me. Recently I decided I wanted a D-28, then I decided I liked a D-35 more than the 28. Now I imagine I’d like a J-40. However I’ve yet to play the J-40. There is one about 1.5 hours away, but the store doesn’t have a D-35 to compare it to, so I’m not rushing up there to try it. Like you, this would be the most expensive guitar I’ve ever purchased. I’d like to get it right.

Prices here on brand new guitars, amps, etc at most stores is not spiking too high, but there is either a feast or famine in terms of availability.
Prices on used guitars, amps, etc at local stores are showing some price variations … again, some items plenty and others near impossible to find.
Hop on the crazy train they Craigslist or Kijiji ….. pretty much every thing has an extra coupla hundred bucks - business as usual for folks selling a guitar used only a coupla times that they bought overpriced in the first place
…. where’s my beer?
Cheers always
