Doc mentioned in another thread (not in the Cure section) about new Cures being fitted with 5881's. I thought I'd move that conversation to the Cure section so we can keep track of this.
It will be interesting to know if this will be a drop-in for us current Cure owners. Doc mentions it will add more headroom.

Here’s what the Doc had to say about it back in 2017 so I’m guessing that if they sound good now either the current crop of tubes sound better or maybe some other values need to be changed along with the tubes.
“ Well I do remember trying many different 6L6's in the CURE during it's development, and wasn't impressed. Cathode biased 6L6's along with the Triad output transformer just didn't dance well together IMHO. The JJ 6V6 worked the best and I didn't look back.”
That is assuming of course that the 6L6 and 5881 are interchangeable, which may or may not be the case here.

I saw that on the Tube and Bias Info page on the Dr. Z Amps site while looking up info on my new to me Monza last week. I imagine it's more than just a tube swap. Someone asked and even the previous change to a 12AX7 PI (mine takes a 12AT7) and 5U4 rectifier (mine takes a 5AR4 like the latest version) wasn't just a tube swap.
I'm not sure that I'd want to change the sound of my Cure, but 5881s are pretty awesome!

Here's Doc's response from the other thread:
But when swapping different model tubes a bias resistor change is prudent. When swapping the 6v6's in a Cure for 5881's up the bias resistor value to: 250 ohm / 10 watt .
I'm leaving mine as-is.

I bought mine used but I believe it's probably one of the first run or so. With the 12AT7 PI and 5AR4 Rectifier. I'm leaving mine as is. I love mine with the NOS RCA Blackplate 6V6's that I've been using!

I would love to try a Cure with 5881's. This is one of the Z's that I couldn't connect with, but I think it has to do with how I generally don't care for 6V6 when they distort. They have a little bit of harshness to my ears. I loved the controls and tone stack on the Cure and my Kendrick has 5881 and that kills me. Maybe someone will have one of these at a Z-Fest someday.
