I put on a set of the D'Addario XT coated strings a month ago. I've never used coated before. They seemed no different in tone. But there was a bit less string squeak when moving your fingers to a new position.
I played two weeks on them, then the guitar sat in a case for two weeks as I went on vacation.
The results:
The wound strings did tarnish a bit. Perhaps not as bad as regular strings, but it was noticeable. And when I put a new set of non-coated strings on, they sounded brighter/crisper. They had all that wonderfulness you get with new strings. The coated strings were only on a month...of which two weeks of that was in a case.
So the verdict is: I will not be using the coated strings anymore. They're not worth 3X the cost to me. The coated are $14-15...and my regular strings are $5.50 or so.

I tried the coated years ago when they first came out and couldn't warm to them. I'm sure they've improved in feel and tone. I'm guessing it's still tough to beat traditional when our ears and fingers are so used to them.
As I said in another thread, I was surprised to find out that the Martin strings I use have some type of coating. It's not the full 'long life' coating because they sell more expensive strings touting a 'long life' coating.
For the strings I use, Phosphor Bronze SPs, they just changed the design and up'd the price by a dollar or two (paid $6.33/set). I don't know if it's my imagination or not, but they don't sound as live and vibrant. I still have a few of the old designs. I'll be curious to put them on next to see what I hear. I'm dreading going down the rabbit hole of strings if I do sense a difference and can't buy the old ones.
Gotta love change. Wait! I don't like change! Why can't the just keep making the same strings. Once I find a shoe that fits, why can't they just keep making that model? Ugh!

I bought this Martin Custom Shop 000. Beautiful guitar, but had to search for strings to brighten up the tone. Finally found them. If you are looking to brighten up your tone, try the Ernie Ball Aluminum Bronze strings. They sound great and last a long time.
