Hi. Two part question: which amps use 6L6 power tubes and or which sound the most like blackface Fender amps. I have a Z-28 which I love and am looking to add another. Thanks

Also, the Lux can use 5881s which are basically 6L6s. Both amps are out of this world by the way.

If you are looking for killer blackface tone with headroom to spare, there's no way you could go wrong with the EZG.

I've had a few Blackface and Blackfaced amps, but my Therapy doesn't sound like that. Although, the Therapy really is my favorite amp, probably ever. If I were looking for Blackface tones, I'd get an EZG. I had an EZG and frequently wish I still had it.

Another vote for the EZG-50. Z-Lux is also an excellent choice, especially if you would like built-in tube tremolo.

Also JAZ 20/40. Uses 6V6's but can also use a certain 5881 which is a slightly lower power version of a 6L6. The JAZ is essentially the same amp as a Z-LUX.

Welcome to the forum!
Not sure what your needs are (gigging, home use, etc), but the Cure is a derivative of the Z-Lux and has the excellent Level control. It's my main gig amp.

And soon to be fitted with 5881's ( early releases of a 6L6's ) . The Cures sound excellent with 5881's , more clean power and overall output still with the LEVEL control for output volume perfection. We need to successfully release this change to the CURE so that some CURE owners panties won't let in a bind Not an easy thing to do it seems . Z

Z Doc, will there be any modifications needed to the Cures that are out there or will it be "plug n play"? This sounds like an excellent option!

As you know I love cathode biased amp designs, or aka self biasing designs. No need for a bias adjust when replacing same tubes, and automatic bias compensation when wall voltage varies. But when swapping different model tubes a bias resistor change is prudent. When swapping the 6v6's in a Cure for 5881's up the bias resistor value to: 250 ohm / 10 watt .
I hoped this wouldn't turn into a thing. The CURE is wonderful as 20 watt grab go amp and with LEVEL control perfect for at home playing. The 5881 make the amp more useful for small to medium sized gigs . Now that clubs are reopening a play at home amp which has been the rage during the Covid shut downs is not as important to many players.

Thank you for the info Doc. Not sure I will venture into the 5881 change but the option appears to be a simple one (other than finding the best 5881 offerings) and coupled with the excellent level control it will make for a cool amp.

+1 thank you Doc. I'm leaving my Cure as-is. No need to modify it IMO.
