Man, after 11 years of drooling over a stangray I found one. $1450 for the head and blue loaded 2x12s. AND it’s a red head.
Anyway, I have had 3 z wrecks and always get rid of them due to volume but was curious what overdrive pedals you guys are using with the ray? Looking for that elusive edge of break up and touch responsiveness if possible

Z Drive, of course!
I also really like my Spiral Effects Yellow drive - evolution of the DOD 250, iirc.
Not sure how much quieter than the wreck it will be though…

I'm happy with the Greer Lightspeed and either the Tim and Timmy (both v2). Barber Gain Changer also works well at lower drive settings. Tube Screamer type pedals don't do much for me with the Ray with the exception of the Fulltone FullDrive II. Would like to try a Crowther Hotcake at some point.

Not sure how much quieter than the wreck it will be though… I’m actually surprised at the volume…. It’s loud of course but not nearly what I expected. That and I feel like the Ray can still do it’s thing at lower volumes in comparison to the wreck needing to be at like 1 o clock. I am still going to get ANOTHER Z wreck though but try it with the Fryette Ps2. Just waiting for the right deal

I have good luck with the king of tone, way huge red llama, the wampler paisley drive is excellent, and I imagine the Timmy style pedals are great too. I'd look for any pedal without a strong EQ bump in one way or another to keep the tone of the Ray intact.
I want to get an original timmy one day...

An alternate approach… There is a cool pedal some of the Jerry (Garcia) guys use called a Thick Air. It’s basically a pair of preamp boost chips that really push the front end of an amp, but stay super clean. It’s kind of a similar thing. I’ve used a klon clone in clean mode, and a Nux Steel Singer, but I like the TA best.
As an aside… I was prepping an Ampeg J12D for sale and got it to do a similar thing… set the guitar volume on 6, then pushed the amp to the edge of breakup. It worked pretty well. Of course we know Ken Fisher worked for Ampeg. It’s not even close to as versatile as the zwreck jr, as that only works at one volume. Probably good studio thing.

I don't have a Stang Ray, but I had a Z Wreck Jr and the OD pedal that was most similar is my Crowther Hotcake. It's a very Vox-like amp-like pedal and they're not too expensive.

I will second these options as fantastic ones.
Crowther hotcake. Hard to find but possibly THE ultimate overdrive for Voxes. One caveat, you kinda need the vox to be a tad dirty already. May not work as well with a squeaky clean amp, at least in my experience.
The Tim is pretty much always good. I’d rather use a Barber Gain Changer though. Fills the same role, just as well. And I like Barber more as a company, that I’d want to support (I know that’s irrelevant to some, not trying to pick fights). Greer light speed is another CLOSE circuit to Timmy. Only issue you may have with these is midrange may be too transparent. Mid scoop of the Ray may leave you wanting a hair more mids from one of the drives below.
I had a Paisley drive, it’s good. Worth a shot but again, prob prefer the Gain Changer.
If you need a touch more Mid push a KOT and Klon clone may be better. Both worth a look but there’s plenty of KOT derivatives now to shop. JHS Morning Glory and Wampler Pantheon are easy to find. These all have more prominent mids for the “transparent” drive group, but not as mid pushed as a tube screamer (which may also be worth trying).
If it were me, I’d start with a gain changer. Then pair that with a KOT clone or Klon style.
