I've watched about every single video about this amp, and I absolutely love what I'm hearing. I'm thinking about pulling the trigger, but I'm still not sure because of the lack of an fx loop. I often use heavy reverb and delay in my playing, would this amp be a poor choice for me? Does anyone of you have any experience using heavy time based effects with this amp?

Let me give you my 2 cents. This amp excels with the guitar straight in. It has wonderful natural overdrive that can clean up with a twist of your guitar volume knob. It has great touch and dynamics. Playing it like this is not good for delays or reverb as they will become too amplified. This is the way I prefer to play it. With that said, there are many on this forum who set the Wreck clean and use pedals for overdrive, delay, and reverb. There's nothing wrong with that either. The amp will take them up front. It's all in what you want.

I will probably look into other Dr Z models, thank you for taking the time to answer!

There was a time that I thought I needed effects, but amps like this and the MAZ JR NR proved to me that I didn't necessarily need them. With that said, if you still are looking for the EL-84 thing and you needed reverb and delay, check out a Maz Jr with verb or no verb. The NR has a loop. It is a staple amp and many people here use it as their main amp.

This amp sounds great with an outboard reverb unit emulator like the Catalinbread Topanga with the Topanga's volume turned up a bit to push the front end of the amp. If anything, the clean to mean touch dynamics were improved when doing this. I got the idea to try this after seeing Brad Paisley use a Z-Verb in front of his Z Wreck.

I would love to try it out, but my dealer in Sweden does not keep one in stock so I basically have to order one to be able to play it. I have also looked at the Maz 18 NR, from what I've seen it seems super versatile. It's just that Z Wreck Jr sound affects me deep somehow...

I'm sure that would work out great for a bit more subtle reverb sound. But I also like to use shimmers and large spacey sounds from time to time, and it's those that I'm worried about.

A reverb pedal in front of it may be fine even if you crank up the overdrive. Any Delay will need to have a really good mix control to set it just right. I'll say this, don't let the lack of reverb and delay keep you from this great amp. The Wreck Jr is a GREAT amp!

Never tried a wreck, but I've come around to really liking delays in front of the amp. It's a natural ducking effect and has a lot of character. The ultimate for that stuff is to do it the Larry Carlton way where you mic the amp, have an effect until in a mixer, and run the mixer to a couple powered monitors (wet dry wet). Then it's just like when you add effects at the board and you are "adding" delay/modulation to the signal. I did that for years because the loop on the amp I was using at the time just killed the tone. Anyway, to me now, if you are going to do it, go full bore, otherwise, it's surprising how well a delay can work in front of the amp... like they used to do. My dunlop echoplex and Strymon El Capistan work very well like that. You could call up Brad and ask him why he didn't want one in the first place. He'd probably say because he didn't want one and they aren't needed. Obviously Mike would know.

What you could do if you had a little more $ to spend is get a Fryette Power Station 2 and use it to crank the Z Wreck to get the natural overdrive and put your delay and reverb pedals in the effects loop. Mine sounds outstanding like that.

Yeah, I've got some thinking to do. Thank you for your answers! What I do is: Set up the amp for the max distortion/volume I want Set the reverb pedal to get as splashy as I want with the amp set as I want it Use the guitar volume knob and playing strength to alter volume and distortion. It gobbles your reverb in front of the amp. Trust me... I have the flint reverb on for all the wreck jr parts here: Let us know what you decide. I love it.

Thank you everyone for your answers, and thank you especially feifongwong for the video! The crunchy chords you strummed at around 4:55 sounded really clear and well-defined even with reverb and delay, I'm impressed the reverb didn't get washed out and over saturated. The Maz sounds awesome though, it boggles my mind how responsive these amps are to the volume knob.
Jesus christ, this is like Sophie's choice...

Like you, I live in an area where there are no Dr Z dealers so I had to go by leap of faith. My entry to this company was my MAZ. They are really amazing. I’d say go with the wreck and if you don’t like it, you’ll have no trouble trading it for a MAZ I bet.
