Recently purchased a used 2x10 combo from 2007. This makes for my 5th Dr Z. I really like the amp. One question, I retubed the amp with new tubes (with a Sovtek 12AX7LPS in the driver slot), but compared to other demos I've heard, with the same settings as the demo, my amp seems to have a little less gain. Specifically, as compared to the Peach Guitars demos with the Z28.
Were there any changes to the circuit during the length of the production run? I'm not talking about the driver tube change, rather, actual changes to the circuit itself.
Thanks in advance, Lee

No changes in the original release of the Z 28 since its inception. The differences in gain that you perceive through a recorded video maybe :
Hotter bias adjustment on the 6V6's Higher gain EF 86 in slot one Different speaker, Greenback 12" as opposed to cleaner 2x10 Or even hotter guitar pick-ups

Didn't the Z28 used to come with a 5751 phase inverter tube?

And that may be construed as a " Change to the Z 28 ", but to me its just a tube swap that is easy changed. But the OP did state he put a Soviet 12AX7 LPS in the PI. Z

Thanks for all of the replies. It is much appreciated. Just as a follow up to some of the questions posted, I have the amp biased at 28mA at 385 volts on the plates. And yes, I have a sovtek 12AX7LPS in the phase inverter.
I'm thinking what I might be hearing is a little bit of speaker distortion from the demos. The Z10's sound good, but I'm thinking there's not as much breakup as you would get from a single G12H30 or greenback.

Depending on how loud you will be gigging the amp, the Dr Z 10's are rated at around 70 watts each so they will stay pretty clean unless pushed. I had a 2x10 Z cab when I had my 28 and I removed the Z 10's and put in lower wattage ones - Webers at 30 watts each, then Jupiters at 30 watts each. It was still loud but I was able to get some speaker breakup sooner. If I remember correctly the 1x12 combo came stock with a 25 watt Greenback so that will give you early crunch! Enjoy your new amp!
