Lots of delay pedals out right now and I own a few. After reading the post about collecting delay pedals and not being able to find exactly what I'm looking for, I thought I'd ask you fine folks for recommendations. Here's what I'm looking for: - Analog or digital. If analog, I don't want it too dark or muddy.
- Tap Tempo.
- As small of a footprint as possible. I don't have room on my board for the larger pedals.
- I don't need tons of features. I really just want something I can set for slapback, then tap tempo 1/4 notes.
- Don't need more than 600ms delay, but if it does have more delay time available, no big deal.
- Prefer true bypass.
Thanks in advance.

First one that comes to mind is the JHS Lucky Cat.

Agree totally with JeffG. The JHS Lucky Cat is excellent. It has a control to determine the brightness or darkness of the repeats. Has tap tempo. It has a standard digital delay mode or a tape echo mode. Has a couple modulation settings or you can have it without modulation, squeaky clean. Definitely a great delay.

Diamond Memory Lane Jr. (which I don't recall is still made or not?) seems to check-off all your boxes. It's not tiny, but it is small-ish compared to a lot of other monstrous digital pedals out there.
Or honestly--just go for any of the newer Boss DD-family of pedals. Even the DD-3T (newer version of the popular DD-3, now with tap tempo) fits your requirements perfectly.

First one that comes to mind is the JHS Lucky Cat. I'll have to re-look at that one. Seems some folks online had issues with the Lucky Cat. I'll do some more research. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have a DD-5 but really want true bypass. I bought a bypass pedal to use with my DD-5, but never received it and then ordered another from a different seller. The LED quit working after a couple days. Seems bypass pedals and I are destined to not co-exist.

I had Wampler The Doctor for a few years and it’s a really solid delay. What finally bumped it off my board is the Walrus D1. It’s great and meets all your criteria. The Walrus Audio website has great demos as well as info on pedal specs.

Hmmm... I'm definitely a delay nerd / junky. For what your asking the MXR Echoplex seems to fit the bill. It's analog and small. Has a remote tap temp jack which might be helpful on a crowded board, it had a tape age knob that darkens the repeats. Not Boss DD bright, but not dark either. It has a switch for true bypass or buffered inside.
I alway prefer buffered bypass on delay because it doesn't abruptly stop the repeats when you switch it off. But some prefer TB. So having the switch is nice nice nice nice ••••
Worth a look. Enjoy the hunt.

Found a JHS Lucky Cat locally and bought it. I've only had about an hour with the pedal, but so far I like it a lot. Thanks for the recommendations!

Keith A is our resident delay pedal “junkie”. I’m surprised he hasn’t chimed in yet!

I keep coming back to the Source Audio nemesis. I also love the Keeley Eccos.

This one has stayed on my board longer than any. I heartily agree. I think the only reason it does not get more love is, due to the price, there are fewer of them out there so not many players have any experience with it. I too have never taken it off my board since I bought it about 9 years ago.

I’d have to know too much about them to recommend something based upon that criteria listed! Lol, for starters, I have no idea which of my myriad of delay pedals is true bypass....nor does it matter to me 😀

The only delay pedal I have with actual tap tempo capability is the mxr echoplex that requires the ext switch to use tap tempo. I rarely go above slap delay levels. The echoplex sounds great before dirt as well. I have a moog minifoofer delay that has an expression pedal input and a drive control as well! I use that function all the time to push my z wreck junior. Also I have the lowly Ibanez de7 echo/delay. It doesn’t have tap tempo but it’s one of the best delay pedals around for the price. I’m far from a delay expert. Like I said it’s mostly slapback for me, just to “thicken” my sound a little. (I’ve had strymon delays but I lacked the qualifications to use all those options to their potential!)

I never thought the tap was all that necessary, but my band plays a song that needs the delays to be in time. With drummers, sometimes the tempo varies from gig to gig. Otherwise, it will likely be a couple slapback songs and that's it.
First gig with the pedal tonight. We'll see how much I fumble around with it.

I have that. It's a great little pedal. I have the flashback and the HOF reverb (same pedal just reverb instead of delay) on a little board. Not flashy or booteekey- but it sounds great. It also interfaces well in effects loops of all kinds. Some pedals are fussy in that regard . The tone print is cool to mess with too. Hard to beat for the money.

Tried a couple TC Electronics pedals, including the Flashback and two different HOF. I don't like them. To me, they sound dull regardless of which bypass mode they're in.
