Part question/part musing. It seems that many of the "famous" light OD pedals, such as Klons and its clones, Tubescreamers, etc, are said to offer a big midrange boost more so than distortion. I'm wondering if that's not so necessary for those of us playing Dr Z. amps. It seems like these pedals are most often paired with blackface Fenders or equivalent, which are low on midrange. I have a Cure and a Z-Lux, and tend to have the mids set around 2pm. When I use a "transparent" (i.e. flat EQ) OD like the MXR Timmy, it doesn't seem to be lacking anything. Are pedals with the big mid hump overkill for these amps? I should say that I do not own a Klon clone or a Tubescreamer-type pedal to test. I'm just wondering if I missing out?

I've owned 5 different model Z's. I also own many overdrive pedals, almost all of which have a mid bump. They sound great. I guess it depends how you set up your amp. I also like some mids, to help cut through the mix. All my Z amps have a mid control. Maybe these pedals wouldn't sound as good to me on an amp that had a fixed midrange.

My 2 cents is throw out any preconceived notions and internet wivestails and try whatever with whatever. More often than not for me it's things I think shouldn't work that do work and vice-versa. Eric Johnson's buffered tube screamer into a fuzz face is a good example of that, and that the coolest sound ever to me.

Dan and Mick at That Pedal Show (TPS, on YouTube) have done a lot of good shows discussing overdrives and amp interactions. Worth checking out if you're not familiar with TPS.
