Hi, I'm trying out a new Jetta. I notice there is a huge amount of hiss when the master goes past 11 o'clock. It doesn't matter where the other controls are set, they can be at zero and there's still loud hissing. This happens with or without anything plugged in. I swapped out the preamp tubes, no change. This hissing noise is much louder than my hi gain amp's background noise.
Anyone else notice this?
Thanks, Swampcooler

I have a couple Jetta’s, badass amps! There is a lot of drive in the output section and the master reaches max pretty early, I rarely find my self getting the master much above 11am in a gig setting. But ya, even with the input volume set to 0, if I raise the master I can hear gain noise. Is it brand new?

Thanks for your insight. Yes, brand new, 3 days old. There's a large amount of gain in the output section of these amps, considering it is a 30+ watt amp at full clipping. You will find that even at 11 o clock the amp is quiet loud, and past 12 and into 1 o clock you begin to clip the output section. This is normal. My advice would be to set the volume (gain) where you like it, whether clean or edge of breakup or dirty, while the master is at 9 o clock, then find your preferred volume level from there with the master.

I've had one for several months. I was surprised also by the amount of hiss. However, at usable volumes, with a reasonable signal from the pedal board and non-wimpy volume (gain) setting (but still clean), the output/signal completely obliterates the hiss. In my experience, anyway. I think it's a great amplifier. (But I'm really a drummer, mostly. So ....)

You might want to check V1. I was getting a lot of noise and could hear some ghosting with certain notes. Swapped out V1 and it's quiet as a mouse. Well, at normal levels. I agree will all the above that there is hiss with the master above noon, but I can't imaging ever needing to turn it up that high!

I have one. Hiss was bothering me as well. Here’s what I did:
[Warning: do not attempt this if you don’t know your way around an amp or you could literally die! Do not do this if you care about your warranty! Do not do this if you care about resale value! With that out of the way...]
1. Removed the loop. I never used it, and I don’t actually know why anyone would in this amp because there is not a lot of preamp gain (only 1/2 of a 12AX7). This was by far the primary source of noise, even with nothing plugged into the loop. At least in my setup, the amp is quiet now. 2. While I was in there, I changed the 68k input grid resistor to 10k. This brings the hiss down further, and is especially noticeable when no guitar is plugged into the amp.
These mods took about 10 minutes to do. Btw, I wouldn’t have bothered with these mods if I didn’t love this amp. I have 3 other Z’s, and this is my current favorite. All of my guitars sound awesome with it. I’m actually looking for a second one for a stereo setup.
I hope this helps some folks. It really made a huge difference for me.
