My main sound I like is my Les Paul/SG's into a Route 66 with OCD. Tone Bender I for that beautiful midrange hump.
Alternately I like a Tele with Fuzz Face into the same amp.
Everyone I talk with says to give P90's a try because of my love for midrange but I am not sure the one guitar to pick.
I think looks wise an SG or LP Junior might fit the bill, but I recently went to a G&L shop and got recommended a p90 version of their tele. However, I was only able to play the standard tele. Felt good in my hands
thoughts?

If your talking about their large MFD pickups as on the ASAT special (bottom of picture), I can tell you they are a nice versatile pickup. I have no experience with P90 guitars, so I can’t offer a comparison. I can tell you they retain the single coil clarity with the drive of humbuckers. As for G&L guitars, I own 3 and am very pleased with all of them. I bought 2 used at very discounted prices from new. They are all USA models. The ASAT Special was a pawn shop find I got for $400. You may be able to find a Special at a discounted price as they are outside of the traditional T-style, due to the pickup design. At first I wasn’t sure about the special, but after working with it and using the tone and volume control extensively, I cherish its versatility. Good luck with your swim in the ocean.

I'd say go play them if possible. As you can see from my avatar, I have a P90 Gold Top. I've had it since '76. It is a machine. My only gripe is the single coil buzz since my main thing these days is recording. But, I'll say I love the P90 tone.
So, my Les Paul was my only real electric from 1976 - 2002. I decided it was time to do something new and after a fair amount of research, had my eye on a nice tele. At one shop, they had to go to their warehouse to get the tele I wanted. While waiting, I picked up a strat, plugged it in, strummed a few notes, and thought "That's the Sound!" When the tele came, I just didn't bond. I tried a few others with the same result. I can now say I'm a proud strat owner since 2002.
If you can, play some. That's probably tougher especially now. And, P-90s aren't always just sitting around.

I've got a Lollar P90 in my Melody Maker, and what has surprised me is how much I like it for clean to light break-up sounds. It's got growl but also has a bit of chime.
I'd definitely give a P90 guitar a shot--it really is a different thing.

Since you mentioned an SG Jr, I'll share my experience. I bought a new one from Sweetwater. As much as I liked the tone and really wanted it to work out, the neck was simply too fat for my liking. If you like 50's era neck carves, you'll probably like it. I returned it. YMMV

I haven't played any G&Ls , but I love P90s! There's nothing like the honk of a good P90! I have a 1959 Gibson ES-225TD and a 2000/2001 Guild Blues 90!

I have a 2016 Gibson SG with stock P-90's. There are lots of other pickup makers out there but I don't hear anything with these that I don't like. Just as a reference, my standard for what a P-90 should sound like was learned from when I had a 1954 Gold Top Les Paul. Gibson has screwed up a lot of things over the years. The P-90 is not one of them.

Another option is just doing a pickup swap in something you have. Curtis Novak is a genius at putting any pickup style into the form of something else. My Jazzmaster has one of his P90's in the neck. You would never know that it wasn't a normal ol Jazzmaster pickup.

Been dating a tv blonde Les Paul Special with stock standard Gibson P90s for the past couple of years … Am looking at adding in both a SG Special with '90s and a Les Paul Junior with single '90 and wrap bridge (sometime in 2021 … just 'finished' our kitchen renovation and waiting for the magic money tree to grow some new leaves … ) … if I was gonna start again I'd buy a good Les Paul Junior and have some fun cheers always Joel

Love the P90 pickup and finding the right one is key. Gibson’s pickups sound great clean but not being wax potted and being slightly over wound generally makes prone to feedback and very noisy. If you can find a pickup wound to 7.0 to 7.5 and potted you run a nice medium drive you’ll great open tone that’s very creamy. Then hit that drive with a boost and you’ll get satisfying growl with a totally manageable feedback and hum that doesn’t sit out front of your tone. One of my favorite guitars and one that will never leave my collection is a Gibson Melody Maker Special and after watching an episode of Doug and Pat and there P90 shoutout ordered a set from Geppetto Guitars. Totally kick Butt.

If you don’t want to spend a million bucks then take a look at the Eastman SB56. Splendidly made guitar!
