Anyone every drop a Z Best under their 112 combo? I'm sure the cab sounds great with a Maz head, but I'm wondering if 3 12" isn't over kill. I guess for that matter, have you partnered the 112 combo with an extension cab? What was it and what did you think?

When I had my Maz 38 1x12 combo years ago I would pair it with another 1x12 cab and use a PCNS "Y" speaker cable to connect them. To my ears, even though it was two 1x12 cabs, it didn't give me the same sound as a 2x12 cab. It was a great option and did work, but to my ears a 2x12 cab sounded better. I also realize that a Z Best is a different animal than a regular 2x12 cab so that might bring other sonic issues.

When I had my Maz 2x10 combo with a z 1x12. They were all Z speakers and sounded nice, tight and full. Also connected the Z-Best once. I only did that in my basement. That sound was huge.. That seems to be the best way to describe it.

I've been reading a bunch on the Z-Best and I think given how much it projects it is probably not the solution for me. I've had the Z 112 extension with my current rig and it didn't do a ton for me. I think my next order of business will be to rehouse my Maz in a studio 112 and then consider a ported 112 to bring in a little more depth.

I’m not sure what you are going for, but since your thinking of acquiring a cabinet and looking at something ported, perhaps house that Maz in a head cabinet and try it into a Z-Best. It was a great sound. I sold my Z-Best when we moved as it was the older heavier version and I was scaling back gear. When I traded my Antidote for my Therapy, the store had a matching Z-Best with the Therapy. It sounded sweet. Just a thought.

This may not be a good reference for you (it's a great watch though!), but here is Buddy Whittington with a Maz 38 into a Z Best.

Well, wasn't that pretty! I think that combo works. And that blues playing, just wow. You can spend a lifetime working on blues phrasing and never get it. I don't have a z-best, but you just might find it sounds better just into the z-best or the combo, and maybe not both. Sometimes combining things is more subtractive than additive.

I would like to have the option of getting a more full sound at times. I think your right, the Z Best is an either or. With the way it projects at some distance from the set up you’re going to get a lot more of the Best and little of the combo. That wouldn’t be my desire. I’m thinking of grabbing a Mesa Theil 112. I had one when I was ending my Boogie trials and going back to Z. It was okay with my Cure. I didn’t care for the EV speaker in it. Much too hifi. So that can with a speaker that will compliment my Blue that’s in the combo.
