Hey guys!
Hoping that someone with more knowledge than me can answer this, but why did the good Doctor decide on 8 ohms in the Z Wreck Jr combo versus 16 ohms in the bigger Z Wreck combo? Does it make a difference in tone? Just curious what Dr Z’s thought process was on that. This is not me questioning his decision, just my curious brain wanting to understand why and what difference it makes tonally!

my guess, this is only a guess but I would say that during development Z was trying different speakers that were in the shop and that combination just sounded the best.

Not with just Z amps, but with ALL combo amps that use a single 8 ohm speaker.

I believe the Z-Wreck combo is an 8 ohm. The 2-12 is wired in series at sixteen ohms which would require 8 ohm speakers. I’m guessing the desire for the series wiring may have driven the choice of sixteen ohms. So why not 4 ohm speakers to achieve 8 ohms in series? I’m going to guess (again) inventory control. Why inventory another sku.

Why inventory another sku. Well not exactly, but good point. Brad wanted his 2x12 to be 16 ohm on the original Z Wreck, one he felt it sounded better then 4 ohm, second it emulated the Vox AC-30 wiring. I use 8 ohm in 1x12 combos because most +90% of 1X12 extension cabs are 8 ohm, so 1x12 combo can be coupled to a 1x12 ext.with use of an excellent PCNS ( Todd's ) Y - Cable. Z
