Hey guys! With single coils, where on the volume dual does your Z Wreck Jr start breaking up? I have lower output pickups and my Jr starts breaking up just after 9 o clock. Is this normal?

Depends....What "low output" pickups are you using? How loud is the amp at 9 o'clock?

Hi jessemjohnson, I'm a bit late to the party here but I can offer you my experience of using my ZWreck Jr, as I have a Fender Nocaster with relatively low output single coil pickups.
With the master volume set between 9-10 o'clock when playing at home, if the gain is anywhere around 11 or higher, I can start to hear some breakup depending on how hard I hit the strings. Of course the higher the gain then the less hard I have to hit to make the amp breakup, and although I don't think i've ever played with the gain set to 9 o'clock like you describe, I cannot imagine getting any distortion at all at this low level.
If the master is pushed past half way, then you may well be getting some distortion with the gain quite low, as I presume the output valves are the ones now providing the distortion, but it would be fairy slight still.
All controls at noon seems to be where I live with this amp when using a telecaster in rehearsals, sometimes nudging the gain a little for more overdrive and maybe moving the master up to 2 o'clock for meaty sounding riffs, and I just bring the master down to between 9-10 for home.
Is getting breakup at low volume a problem? This is kind of what this amp is designed to excel at, so you don't have to use overdrive/distortion pedals or mess about with attenuators to get that fabulous breakup, but obviously if it's real quiet and still distorting, then you may have a bigger problem that's beyond my level of expertise if it's not easily solved by swapping in some new preamp valves.

Hey guys! Thanks for the responses. I’ve actually come to identify my Universal Audio OX as the culprit. I was able to play my Z Wreck Jr. through a cab at my local guitar shop and it sounded as it should (amazing). Now, the breakup tones through the OX sound amazing as well, but there is an inherent ever-so-slight hint of digital distortion when playing the amp clean.

Large differences with speaker cabs and if you are using the compressor and effects plugins. Thx Ed

Hey Ed! After more tinkering tonight, I switched the amp and OX from 16 ohm to 8 ohm and SHAZAM. There was a noticeable difference. The amp was cleaner at 8 ohms for sure. Now that has me wondering several things, mainly about the OX lol. All I can say is that at 8 ohms, the amp sounds like I want it to. I’m using the greenback 4x12 cab in the OX, 100 watt setting on the cab settings (offers a touch more headroom). No compressor on the OX.
