I'm a Dr Z fan and am thinking about a used ezg but I know there's a bass issue with early ones--
Some questions:
1 -First of all, what was the issue? Too much bass?
2 -How can I recognize if the one or ones I'm looking at have the issue? Did they look different, or did the issue end with a certain serial # or on a certain date?
3 - If I buy a head and if I use a 2x12 cab which is open back, would the issue matter anyway?
I'm sure this info is probably somewhere in the forum, but don't make me look for it, please.
I have Z-LUX which I love but I think an EZG might be more my speed.
Thank you so much,
Brian

1) Yes 2) 2013 or later (X serial number?), has the mod. I don't know if any of the oval front ones also had the mod. If you get a square valence\grille, I think you will have it. 3) Yes, but YMMV

I had an early EZG and really did like it. My only beefs with it were 1- Too much bass and 2- It was kinda bright unless it was turned waaay up.
I think the brightness was due to the speaker I used and the fact there was a Weber Beam Blocker as well, that dispersed highs. The speaker I used was a Weber 12F150, which can be kinda bright. I think a newer EZG with the Z12 or Eminence GA-SC64 would be a great.

Thanks to both you guys for a quick answer. I think I better stay away from the early one.

I have the early one and love it. I use it with a 1x15 Eminence Legend - sounds great! I wouldn't shy away from it - I just keep the bass on 1. Works for me.

My EZG-50 was made April 2011 and I do not think it has the newer bass mod. I always keep the bass either all the way down or almost all the way down. That always bugged me as I wasn't sure if I would like it even more with less bass. I hate it when I have to max out a control either all the way up or all the way down. It is an awesome amp even with the bass. I never got much change out of the mid range control. Maybe that had to do with keeping the bass down really low.

Depending on the guitar and cab, I can use the bass knob on my 08 from 0 to about 10-11:00. Most of the time it is at, or below, 9:00 though. It would be nice to be able to use the full range of the knob but I probably won't bother to have the mod done unless it has to go to my tech for some other reason. Only my first (of 3) pre mod heads was totally unusable but now having owned a 2011 and another 08 that were\are OK, I'm convinced that there was something wrong with that first one (tube, shipping damage, gremlin, etc.)

The EZG is my main amp. I've bought other amps since I got my EZG, but the EZG is my sound. It's got a great clean sound, huge head room and sounds like a cranked over-driven amp with the right pedals.
I use lots of sounds and the EZG can cover lots of territory.

Hate to use the word ‘issue’ for an attribute that some may prefer. Dr Z designs often evolve based on user feedback, but every tweak has a cost and to some that is a loss. There is always something special about the V1 designs, when Z stuck a fork in it and said ‘thats it’. Sure there might have been warts, but that was the original and players loved it. I know the bass mod brings an element of control or sound that some may prefer, but I also know there are plenty of Pre-mod owners that wouldnt let a solder iron close to their original. For sure aint happening with my V1 Route 66 and MAZ Jr!

Well I've finally got off my lazy arse and contacted Don. He was extremely nice and helpful. I got a RA number and I'm sending my EZG head in this week.
I play mostly Strats with a Z 4x10 with the new(er) Z legend alnico speakers, which BTW, are a perfect match and an under the radar option over the regular Z 10's. I go for mostly cleanish / slightly pushed stereotypical Super Reverb type tones.
I'm not sure if the people who have the bass issue play HB equipped guitars or are going for a different type of tones?
My issue has been more of an issue with the harder/more strident top end. I couldn't dial in more of a round/bouncier BF tone. The Z legend speakers helped a lot over the regular Z10's.
Don said he has a newer voicing that sounds like it's more of what I'm after. Fingers crossed! Nicer breakup, less of a harder top end.

He mentioned the newest mod came about from someone else wanting a little more of a vintage voicing and feel. Almost the exact same way I felt. Again, nothing wrong with the amp as is, but for what I'm looking to get out of the amp, I feel if the change makes it easier to get the bouncier round cleans I can dial in in grit or add a pedal.
