Any experience with the half-power mod from Dr. Z? I just purchased a used Maz 38 combo with a half-power mod.

I just purchased a 2009 Maz 38 that was sent to Z to mod for half-power. I looked around for discussions but I'm new here and couldn't locate . I was wondering if there's any sonic issue with the half-power mod. Thanks!

I was wondering if there's any sonic issue with the half-power mod. Thanks! That is a fairly unique amp you have. The Maz 38 Mark I was noted to be really loud and clean. Dr. Z took recommendation and developed the Maz 18. That popular amp allowed to players to get into a break up/ distorted tone without the very loud volume. The Maz 38 Mark I with the half power should have the same sonic characteristics in full or half power. The Maz Series Mark II with the Modified MV creates another very useful dimension on the amps, but it is not necessary for all players. Some players love the Maz 38 for its clean head room. That's a start

That makes me happy! The mod gives me the options I really longed to have in one package. I wanted a Maz 18 and would have used it most of the time ... BUT there's that big, clean headroom an 18 can't deliver, so now, hopefully, I'll have both. All of the input I've received thus far on multiple threads have been so helpful ... it feels more like a community of like-minded tone junkies! I love it! Buying an amp without playing through it is really scary ... so all the input and the reputation of the Z amps have enabled me to take that leap. I bought a guitar that was on Reverb one time and one time only! Fortunately, I was able to sell it locally for a little more than I paid for it! I don't foresee that scenario with this amp. He's assured me that he's taken good care of it. It looks spotless. Who knows. I ordered the upgraded tubes used in the Mark II's for the Maz and my Vox AC 15. Who knows, it may take care of the harsh high mids on the Chinese version. Apart from that, the AC 15 sound pretty good for $600!

Just got the amp delivered yesterday. The half-power mod is sonically wonderful. I was also able to a/b my little Vox AC 15 with the Maz in half power ... the sonic attributes of the Z are so far superior (as I knew they would be)! The tubes in the Maz are stock from 2009 and it sounds great. I am taking the chasy out today to do any cleaning and tightening it might need and change the tubes ... power tubes to the recommended NOS Russian IL 84 6n14n. I ordered a pair for my AC 15 to see if the harsh sizzle is eliminated.
I already love this amp!

I printed the manual for the Maz and was surprised to find the power tube recommendations:
Maz 18 - 6n14n Maz 38 - EL 84
I have a quartet of 6n14n for the 38
Does anybody know why the variance in power tubes between the 18 and the 38?

They are equivalent tubes - shouldn't have any problems with the 6n14n in the 38. Humbucker's was selling them as 38 replacement tubes. Here's an AMA on the 6n14n
