Dear DrZ members, I also became recently member of Z-Wreck Jr club by getting used head. What a lovely instrument it is. Together with my Stang Ray head - I have so nay heavenly tones. The only thing that I am really sorry is that I was not able to support good Dr and got both heads from his biggest competitor - used market. I hope the day will come when I am ready to retire and hopefully will be able to support better good Dr and his wonderful company.
I am at home (literally bedroom / office / Guitar heaven small room) player and using the head at speaking volume. (Master at 9:30, Volume also around 9:30) I play a little (15-30 mins) then work a little (15-30mins) then play then work and day(s) passes by.
Can you please advise me how to prolong the life of tubes and amp itself:
1. is it a good idea to have fan on top of the head that blows the air through the top ventilation and keeps tube not hot? 2. when I making a break from playing (15-30mins) should I
a) put the amp into stand by or b) turn off the amp c) do nothing and keep amp going?
Thank you very much in advance for your help
Sincerely yours Bojan from Toronto

Always turn it off if you’re not playing, for safety reasons. How many of us have gotten distracted only to discover the amps been on overnight? Or worse, the cover gets put on it while it’s still running. Haven’t done that one yet...

Turn it off is a great habit to get into, says the guy who came downstairs 36 hours later to find his amp still on.

I came here to make the same point as the last two people- it's not unusual to either leave an amp on or in standby for a break, get distracted and not return to it that day. I'd shut it off.

Id just use standby, more or less what the switch is for. Ive never worried too much about accidentally leaving an amp on, Ive done it plenty of times. Always figured this technology was designed to run 24/7 anyway (back when everything was tube).

What do you think about the fan? Considering that DrZ puts the fan in combos (which are upside down and has much worse cooling) I think it can just help?

I don't think a fan is required for the Wreck Jr. It's built like a tank (all Zs are for that matter). Doc would have included a fan if it were necessary.

I always try to run a fan BEHIND the amp pointed at the power tubes. This helps keep the amp cooler . Some say this will increase tube life, but I don't know. Some of my Z amps run really hot, and this keeps them cooler. I don't think it hurts and amp to run hot, I just like to keep mine a little cooler.
