I'm hoping someone can assist with a problem that's been irritating the crap out of me: I've owned my Maz 18 Jr 2x10 combo since 2001, and have never been able to find a 12at7 for the reverb tube that doesn't have some degree of microphonic or sympathetic "noise" to it. I've purchased at least 4 GT 12at7's over the years, and have also tried some older Phillips and GE tubes that were very long in the tooth when I removed them from my BF Fenders to try in the Maz.
I've always ended up placing a 12ax7 in the reverb tube position as a compromise, just to eliminate the damn ringing that accompanies every 12at7 I've ever installed.
Out of desperation, I swapped a very old Telefunken ECC83 for the reverb tube last night and was pleasantly surprised by the results. The amp softened up a bit overall in tone, and the reverb sounds very smooth and noise free. This is the most noise-free tone I've gotten from any tube in the reverb position, but I'd still like to find a rugged 12at7 for future use.
Can anyone suggest a particular brand of 12at7 that would be resistant to the noise levels generated in a combo? I'd be curious to see how these same 12at7's that I've been having problems with would sound in a Dr.Z head configuration (where the vibration and SPL's are not a severe as a combo). They don't appear to be as microphonic and noisy in my Bandmaster heads as they are in my Maz18 2x10.

Ripple, good to see you're "back"! Guys, John is in a killer R&B/Soul cover band...my jaw was on the floor the last time I heard Big Boss Man...tight tight band.
Btw, good luck with your tube search.

Madison, thanks for the kind words and Aruntang thanks for the links. Karma to both of you!! I knew you guys would come through for me... I don't know what took me so long to post the question. I can only assume I was getting some lousy tubes, because no one else seems to have quite the issue that I do with this problem. BTW, the Telefunken ECC83 that I put in the Maz 18 came out of this old German tape echoplex-type machine I found when I was a kid. It never worked, but I held onto it for some reason (horrible pack-rat). I found it in a box of junk a couple weeks ago, and tore it apart to see if it could be fixed. What lay before me but (heavenly choir sound effect) 1 Mullard and 1 Telefunken preamp tube(s), and both sound great. No noise at all. They've got to be 40 years old... amazing. Unfortunately for the echoplex, I snagged them for my Maz tube stash... so it still lays in pieces! Almost as bad as stealing 9volt batteries out of the smoke alarms for my FX pedals when I was a kid. Mom hated that!!!

Your welcome John! By the way I checked out your website. You guys rip man. Tons of soul. Love it. Here is some karma for the soulful playing and the 'resourcefullness' you displayed in finding tubes.
