What replacement speaker is recommended for a Maz JR (with reverb) combo? Bought mine new with the G12-H. It took a long time to break in, and now that it clearly has, I'm wondering if there is a better speaker out there that can smooth out the top end some while still keeping the fat bottom that this amp offers. Any/all suggestions are welcome. I'm interested in those of you who have swapped out the 1 X 12 combo, as compared to a closed back cab. I've read good things on this forum about the Tonker, any feedback appreciated. Thanks.

Everybody's heard me rave about the Alnico Tone Tubby. I'm still raving about how much i like it.

I've got a Maz Jr. 1x12 combo that I use with a Z 1x12 open back extension cab. I was initially unhappy with the boxy and confined sound of the single 1x12 G12H, but loved my Maz Senior 2x12 combo with the G12H and V30 combo. So, I had the Doc make me a 1x12 extension cab to go with the Junior. Was far better with 2 12's, but still thought it could be better. I just swapped out the G12H's with a Swamp Thang and a Tonker, and life is even better. Honestly, if I had tried either speaker in the 1x12 combo before I ordered the extension cab, I probably would have been happy with just that. With the Maz and just the 1x12 Swamp Thing, you get this nice round, warm and fat American tone with nice solid lows, smooth mids and total control of the treble and cut knobs on the amp. With the Tonker, you get the nice lows and mids, but also this very crisp, spanky British sparkle in the high end that is very distinct and pleasant. Both speakers together makes for a very big sound and wide sonic spread. Both speakers are very balanced and well rounded sonicaly, just depends what flavor you're after. The high wattage rating lets the full character of the Maz really come through IMO. But, I like to hear the amp crunch and compress, not the speakers, that's just me. If you like to hear the breakup characteristics of a lower wattage speaker, I might check out the Weber alnicos (blue dog/silver bell that a lot of people on this forum really dig). Of course this is all a matter of opinion, have fun and try different options. That's one nice thing about the new Eminence line, at $49 a pop, its hard to go wrong for an easy experiment in tone. -Greg

Greg:
Thanks, very helpful description. I will investigate the Swamp Thang because it's the high end that I would like to smooth without losing any sparkle that this amp dishes up. It's a great amp for a Strat. I had a Ghia and a KT45 that I let go but not the MazJr--this one always surprises me with its big bottom and bloom. FWIW, I went through lots of pedals over the years, had Klon #225 that I eventually sold...many others, but am now down to my trusty old Hotcake, a Keeley compressor, and much to my surprise, the best OD/boost pedal that I've come across, the Keeley-modded DS-1. Used as a boost it is cleaner, sparklier, juicier than anything else I've found. It will, of course, take you into sonic mayhem if you dial it in. But as a mild overdrive, I've not found anything else that's better. Thanks again for the feedback.

You can buy 5 Eminences for what a Tone Tubby costs. You can't go wrong with an Eminence.

I've loved all the clips I've heard and the ravings of Doug Roccaforte regarding this speaker. I have two perfectly broken in British G12H-30s in my Jenkins Highway 61 right now and I really dig 'em with the Maz, but I'm always looking for something better! You wouldn't know that feeling would you? The thing is, I think I could spend months, working full time, to try all the speakers and combinations of speakers I'm interested in and I'd probably end up with a complete and unexpected surprise combination at the end of it all! I do have a Tone Tubby H1E in my Hot Cat 30R combo and it sounds amazing in that amp, but it didn't sound all that great when running the Maz 18 into it. Maybe it was just the cab or maybe I just needed to experiment more with new EQ settings.

I've always been a fan of the Weber Ceramic Silver Bell. Have you tried the Weber 1265? That speaker interests me too. How much doping did you get (none, light, medium, heavy)?
